All those art classes came in handy, after all.

Says the person with a graphic design degree who works at a retail arts and crafts supply store...

Well, it's back to school time again. If you work in an art store, that means dealing with lots of bewildered college students taking art classes looking for supplies ranging from the mundane to the obscure-I've-never-heard-of-this-before and everyone comes to or is sent to me because I do the fine art thing for fun and I have taken drawing classes and I know what all that junk is and where it is in the store.

I don't think I've acutally used what's left of my vine charcoal since that one Life Drawing class... anyway,

I'd like to tell individuals reading this journal - If you happen to be a college student taking art classes, don't have your mother do your back-to-school shopping.

First of all, what are you? Eight? Second - Art teachers ask for strange things sometimes, and they can be very specific about what they want you to have. I know - I've taken college art courses, I know how those instructors can be. Unless your mom is taking the class with you, she's probably not going to know what that thing on your supply list is, nor is she likely going to know what you are talking about when you try to explain it. Thirdly, just because you know the difference between a plastic eraser and a kneaded eraser, unless your mom is also an artist, she's probably not going to know that. You may find the poor woman coming home with the wrong supplies, and predictably, she'll come back to my store to return it all.

Save her the trouble, you lazy kid! Come to the store yourself!

It's not that I don't enjoy helping people out and showing off my Art Supply Guru of Doom knowlege, it's just that... man, I feel sorry for these poor mothers coming in, confused as all heck.

... I am often thanked profusely.

i am the art supply queen!, life, work
