So, I heard that Britney Spears' performance was awful on the Video Music Awards. Well, I wanted to make my own decision about that. And in the end, I had to agree with the consensus because oh dear. Lots of lame throughout the VMAs: Tommy Lee heckling Pamela Anderson, Kid Rock apparently punching Tommy Lee, women wearing clothes that were unflattering to their figures, the decision to have suites (where all the energy was) which probably made the people stuck in the auditorium bored to tears half the time, Shia LeBeouf being awkward, and MTV VJ John Norris is a trainwreck all on his own. I don't really watch much MTV because, as Justin Timberlake scolded them, they don't play many videos anymore, and the videos they do play are abbreviated and/or just bad music, so I hadn't seen Norris in forever, but he's really trying to look hip and half his age when he just needs to find his own style.
A little bit of good, though: Serj Tankian (from System of a Down, who I hope will reunite someday) with the Foo Fighters, Chris Brown's dancing was quite good, Rihanna with Fall Out Boy (I totally agree with the people wanting Rihanna/Patrick OMGHETfic now), and 50 Cent's bewildered expression while watching Britney.
Over the weekend, ESPN2 aired the DCI Championships. So cool. I've been a fan of Phantom Regiment since I was a kid, but the Blue Devils were really awesome and powerful. I was actually sort of partial to the Carolina Crown, though. I think because they just went all out with their theme, and it was so adorable.
I completely forgot to mention earlier that I saw Stardust a few weeks ago. I have to be honest and say I was slightly disappointed. :-( I did like it, but I thought it could have been better. I read the book years ago and enjoyed it very much, but all I remembered was the general plot. So I was watching it from a purely cinematic perspective, and the first half seemed to drag. I don't think the problem was the plot, so I'm not sure if this was the director's doing or the editor's or a bit of both. More than once I was thinking, 'they shouldn't have split this scene' or 'I wouldn't have done it quite that way,' which aren't things I should be thinking about while actually in the theatre. I usually don't get that nitpickity until I've seen a movie at least twice. ;-) My father wanted it to be another Lord of the Rings, which he loves, which we all love, so I had to remind him (and myself) that it had neither the budget nor the epic story to live up to those standards. I mean, overall, it was quite good and I will watch it again on cable, but it wasn't stellar. Though afterwards it made us want to start a LotR EE marathon, so that's a good vibe to have left with, I think.
And I definitely wouldn't mind reading some Shakespeare/Humphrey slashfic. Anyone written any? Bueller?
Speaking of seeing movies more than once, have you ever been glad to have seen a movie but never want to see it again? For me, it's mostly for the really sad and/or the really frustrating: Last of the Mohicans, Empire of the Sun, A History of Violence, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (I even have the score for this), and there are more I'm forgetting, but glad I saw them, won't do it again. Even if it was between watching that or The OC (which I've never seen and wouldn't really want to). But I'm sort of surprised that I keep watching The Departed when it repeats. I thought that would go on the list, but somehow Scorsese worked his magic and I can watch it repeatedly. Though laughing while Dignam goes on and on is worth the price of admission.
