1. Mississippi's at it again, this time sending an attorney to jail
because he refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Teh point, you haz missed it.
2. I'm going to say this, I'm going to say it once, and, if you disagree, I can bury you in the most logical, well-researched argument you have ever seen: Women do not
use gender as an excuse. Declining to perform a job on the basis of "being a girl" is just doing exactly what the dominant culture tells us we should do. Because when do show any kind of physical strength, it's considered "unfeminine". This idea that women "use gender as an excuse", even jokingly, is just one more example of how our culture devalues things it considers "feminine". Implying, "She can't do it, she's a girl" is maintaining "natural" cultural order; saying "I can't do it, I'm a girl" is making excuses. There's a problem, here.
3. Now that we've got the crazy out of the way, it's time for some epic geekery.
io9 has dug up a series called
The Incredibly Strange Film Show on YouTube. It's a 12-episode British series from 1988-89 about "psychotronic films", which seems to mean classic horror movies. They have interviews with, among others, Bruce Campbell, George Romero, and Hershell Gordon Lewis.
Here's more description and the highlights.

copperbadge already posted this, but we can always use an extra reminder of why we tell stories and the meanings they take on in our lives. Especially superhero stories.
