EDIT: Ok. Here's what happened. My mom woke me up this morning to tell me that the Pope was dead. I did not take the time to verify that claim. APOLOGIES.
However, since he will be dead soon, I'll leave the rest of the post as is.
Like thorne_scratch said, he's the only Pope I've ever known (which almost sounds like a song lyric, Whitesnake or something.) Speaking of Thorne, I'm still waiting on your fandom pet peeves. :)
Since I wasn't raised Catholic, although my father is a bitter, bitter "recovering" Catholic and my aunt is a fanatic Catholic and all the St. Louis family members are scotch drinking, duck hunting, "let the servants take care of it" Catholics, I don't feel a personal sense of grief. Of course, the stoic Lutheranism of my mother's side probably influenced me more than the ritualistc/fanatical Catholicism of my father's family anyway. Those Lutherans are a wacky, fun loving bunch, let me tell you. Look up stoic in the old oxford-english sometime and my grandmother's mug will be the illustration. Depression era, Swedish immigrants to the midwest give new meaning to the term "taciturn."
Moving on, neither of my parents ever foisted their troubled belief systems on my brother and I. Niether of us have ever even been baptized. Mom and Dad? SUCH hippies. "The kids need to define what God means to them; we have no right to force something like baptism on them." Blah blah blah. Actually, I'm very thankful for it. It saved me endless years in Sunday school and endless Sundays spent listening to my mother's pastor shame her into giving the church more and more money. Not that I don't like the guy. My dad has an anxiety attack whenever he gets within 50 feet of a church (he acts the same way around libraries too, though), and my mom can't stay away.
Anyway, about the Pope. I admit that I'm very interested to see what happens next. How long before the smoke changes color? Will the next Pope be more progressive? Or will we keep marching slowly backward?
Enough of that. How about something completely ramdom? I just changed my ringtone to the theme from The Neverending Story. Do you guys remember watching that when you were little? I STILL want my very own luck dragon.
