Occasionally the conversations I have with visitors veer off-script and enter surreal-land.
ME: *Babbles to a group of people about fossils.*
SMALL CHILD: How do you get out if there's a fire?
ME: Well, the emergency exit is that way...*points*.
SC: No, how do YOU get out if there's a fire?
ME: Um, I'm not trapped back here. This display is on wheels. I can push it out of the way.
SC: But what if the fire's back there with you?
ME: I think I could still get out okay.
SC: But what if it was really fast??
ME: *Notes that the child is grinning gleefully at this. Considers checking for matches.* I don't think that'll be an issue. See, I can get out. *demonstrates* Do you have any more questions about dinosaurs?
However, I did actually get the opportunity to trot out the lecture about similarities in the tetrapod/vertebrate body plan twice today, which was exciting. Even if the one visitor didn't so much ask as have me accost her with knowledge, and the other one probably thought they were asking a really simple question. Oh, well.
i love the general public,
