... In the lab I said, yeah right
What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Quite a bit really: Gave my first national conference presentation (followed by two more, it gets easier). Gave my first international conference presentation (that hasn't gotten easier yet). Dated someone from another country, albeit briefly. Learned to snowboard. Got cast in some movie because I look foreign. Got published. Finally saw Rocky Horror Picture Show and loved it. Got accepted into a PhD program. Got myself into pretty good shape, if not the best I've been in, at least up there, staying up there however has proven more difficult.
Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Not my thing, make them when they matter to you or stop kidding yourself.
Did anyone close to you give birth?
Two off the top of my head, I expect there are a few more, and this trend will continue, we have reached that age
Did anyone close to you die?
Close to me... I suppose not, but there were people I was sorry to see go.
What countries did you visit?
United States, Canada. Yes Canada, customs officials told me I was entering the country on visitors status, since I've been in Japan so long.
What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
I want the relationship I'm in now to develop, this will be an ongoing goal. I want to move through my research more smoothly, rather running from challenge to challenge the way it has been.
What date(s) from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Oct. 23rd, My first international presentation. I'll likely not forget this Christmas either.
What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?
Finished the bulk of my Master's, down to writing most of the thesis. The leftovers to do for it in 2008 are negligible in comparison. Starting a relationship that has some real substance to it (though I don't know how much credit I can take for that).
What was your biggest failure?
My maturity level is not where I want it to be... yet. There are feelings and reactions I have not yet grown up enough to properly control.
Did you suffer any illness or injury?
Pleasantly, no. Sneezes and scrapes at most.
What was the best thing you bought?
... My new apartment is the best thing I leased, how's that?
Whose behavior merited celebration?
I don't like to name names but my family, the friends who worked so hard to see me in Canada. My girlfriend. Sensei and senpai... Friends here too.
Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
On a geo-political-environmental scale, all of us.
Where did most of your money go?
Uh, rent? I don't really spend money, saved up a fair amount actually.
What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Visiting Canada, RHPS, academic milestones mentioned above.
What song will always remind you of 2007?
Uh... Wiid by mcchris? Either that or the Katamari Damashi song.
Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? Same
thinner or fatter? Thinner
richer or poorer? Richer... I guess
What do you wish you'd done more of?
I 'wish' I'd done more socializing, or perhaps just leasure, I wouldn't however actually change anything. I stand by my decisions.
What do you wish you'd done less of?
Hmm, wasting time perhaps?
How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it in a 9 hour meeting in which myself and teh other Master's students presented our thesis drafts to the whole research group. Then I caught a cold.
How many one-night stands?
None, I don't know if I think this is good or bad.
What was your favorite TV program?
Meh, House or Scrubs perhaps? I also watched all of Star Trek DS9 at one point...
What was the best book you read?
Either
Joseph Boyden's Three Day Road or La metaphysique du Tube by Amelie Nothomb
What was your greatest musical discovery?
More Nerdcore and CBCRadio 3.
What did you want and get?
I've listed them all above in one form or another.
What did you want and not get?
A more together sense of self, I made a lot of progress in this mess, but I still need to get in the corners.
What was your favorite film of this year?
No films really touched me.
What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
It was a perfectly normal day, that few people noticed and even I could ignore. Exactly how I like it.
What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
There were a few more accomplishements I might have wanted, but to be honest, I am afraid of satisfaction, it will make me complacent one day.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Shorts, funny T-shirst and riding gear.
What kept you sane?
Me, and a few others helped.
Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
None? It's not that I don't find people attractive, I find a lot of female public figures very titillating, but that is all they are.
What political issue stirred you the most?
Likely the whole climate change thing. The Iraqi invasion and Palestine took a back seat this year for some reason, but the political turmoil swirling around in Pakistan and Burma caught my eye. Of course few world events aren't somehow connected.
Who did you miss?
I'll just say everyone and cut down on space.
Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
Success brings satisfaction, fight it off. Success brings new opportunites with higher stakes, and you can't meet them when you are complacent.
