Diorama was a sort of an orchestral rock album.
Young Modern (at least so far) is pretty much a pop album.
They got the same well-respected arranger Van Dyke Parks (he did Smile with Brian Wilson, for example) to arrange the strings for Young Modern (he was also used on Diorama) but the songs are not as saturated with strings on YM. The arrangements (all instruments) are pretty tastefully done actually, and far less dense than on Diorama. It sounds fresh and bouncy.
It's strange to think a band making bleak derivative grunge music in their teens is now making expertly crafted pop music.
