all grown up

I feel like the Silverchair album could have been slightly better. There are flashes of brilliance, but it lacks the consistency of Diorama.

It does feel like the tight writing and punchy delivery comes with the effortlessness of a band mature beyond their years. Unfortunately they've also fallen into the common mature band's trap of having a lot of "safe" songs. Diorama is pure ambition. Young Modern is about refinement: there are only two tracks that I feel are taking a lot of risks. Hell, Straight Lines (the first single) is the type of track that could be successfully pushed to adult contemporary radio. The second single chosen is nothing special.

Oh well. They could have done worse than a refined pop album with expert drumming and singing and arrangements.

One could make quite the hilarious Silverchair mix CD: Spawn Again after Straight Lines? What a difference. Jesus.
