Handel's Messiah by heart in 2.5 months?

One of the things i really miss is singing in a choir.  I did madrigals, choir, tenor recorder, clarinet & piano (both them to grade 3) so that I could study music at school.  You couldn't study without doing minimum 2 instruments to grade 3 level.  I was never more than a plodder with instruments, but I loved singing and was competent enough.

I'm *cough* years out of practise and definitely lost my top notes (sang soprano).  Anyway I was thinking of joining the mass choir that annually performs Handel's Messiah at the Sydney Opera House every year. They have "real" singers, and there's a large non-auditioned but rehearsed "Messiah Choir" that joins in a number of the choruses.  You have to pay a registration fee (about $120) , and attend every rehearsal.

*BUT*  this year for the first time everyone (including the Messiah Choir) will be performing without scores.    I don't think that I can learn enough between now & November 6th to effectively join the rehearsals and know it all off by heart for early December.    I'm way way out of the habits I'll need.

I should sign up for next year.  Perhaps I should buy the learning CD now, so that I can start early next year.

I'd like to join an amateur choir, but finding one that suits me might be a problem. Or I should find some community college singing lessons next year.

whacketty fun
