What a boondoggle

Well, that wasn't quite the start to 2021 that we wanted, was it? As a Canadian watching the events in the USA, I spent all of yesterday feeling heartbroken, disgusted, and so.fucking.angry. The emotions didn't change when the politicians then appear to have packed up and gone home without doing *something* to get Trump out of office. Today, after ( Read more... )

We don't have a parliamentary system. Removing a president through congressional impeachment isn't instant. It was 4 AM and the U.S. Congress had spent all day sheltering from a terrorist attack, then come back to work to finish affirming for the historical record that Trump was voted out of office. Please have some kind of humanity towards "the politicians."

It's hard to have some humanity for the politicians when the majority of the republicans in the House as well as a handful in the Senate are still pushing the false narrative of a fraudulent election--for their own benefit. (One of my own senators jumped on the bandwagon at the very last minute.) They had a day beyond horrendous, and yet those men and women were still willing to believe Trump was totally blameless for the devastation that occurred.

So for those who were there to do their job, I'm shocked and saddened for what they underwent and proud of their devotion to duty. For the others? Not so much at all.

I’m sorry to hear that one of your senators was among those who acted so shamefully, but I think you may have missed the content of what I was replying to.

I just have no empathy for any of the Republicans. Many of them explicitly backed him; the others kept quiet but did nothing to stop him. Having to listen to somehow like Hawley continue to blather on that night is just teeth-grindingly infuriating ( ... )

Yeah, the whole thing yesterday was disturbing.

I hear ya on the budget thing. I started using an envelope based budgeting program at the end of summer that really opened my eyes to where some of the money was "disappearing" (I'm looking at you subscriptions that aren't much by themselves but put them in a category - oh boy). The taxes in the US are going to be totally f*cked for 2021 - so I am going to hope for the best.

Deep breaths. We've got this :)

THE ENVELOPE SYSTEM. I used that all my adult life up until last March when lockdown started. (I used physical money in the envelopes; I don't know if you are doing the same. It became impossible to do that once there were lockdowns here.) I am a big fan of that system! It is definitely a lot easier to track where your money is going. I hope it continues to work for you.

Mine is totally electronic :) I discovered a program called YNAB (You Need a Budget) in July. I feel a lot less stressed knowing the major bills etc are covered. Hubby and I were "lazy" for years and didn't really pay much attention to things like auto-renewing subscriptions, automatic transfers from checking to savings, and so we'd occasionally wind up with stupid, avoidable bank fees. It was just annoying. And very wasteful. But we hated looking at our very sad checking account balance.

Fast forward to 2020. I got a new job, which pays twice what I made in Seattle, but hubby is still out of work - so - we decided we needed to be more diligent about budgeting.

Well, I think yesterday did a number on most people's ability to concentrate. The first thing I did this morning was watch Congress validate the results of the election. That made me feel a little better. We've just got to make it through the next thirteen days. There's a lot of course correction to do and it will probably take years for it all to right itself. Not to mention that whole pandemic wrinkle that'll need to be ironed out as well. Looks like Biden is assembling a decent team though so that will help.

Congratulations on keeping up with your goals! That's great. Tell Brian and Justin to stop being idiots and cooperate for you.

Sounds like you've found a good solution for your finances. I hope things get easier for you in that regard.

Thanks for the update. It's good to hear from you!

Yeah. You know, I don't think I realized how much all of the unrest in the world -- the USA, especially -- and COVID has impacted my ability to concentrate until the last few days. It's just been pretty much unending stress for ALL of us since March. I am usually a glass-half-full kinda gal, but maaaaan, that hasn't been the case lately. Your optimistic words really helped, thanks.

*hugs*

As a total bystander, he whole thing was madness! May sanity prevail soon.

You can do it, on the fic front - I have faith!

Glad to hear you can make things a bit easier on the finances with a little push from yourself! *hugs*

It's a Lost (TV show) icon with a line from Jimmy Buffett, and does help me get through insanity in any of it's forms, even if just a little!
