What a boondoggle

Well, that wasn't quite the start to 2021 that we wanted, was it? As a Canadian watching the events in the USA, I spent all of yesterday feeling heartbroken, disgusted, and so.fucking.angry. The emotions didn't change when the politicians then appear to have packed up and gone home without doing *something* to get Trump out of office. Today, after ( Read more... )

We don't have a parliamentary system. Removing a president through congressional impeachment isn't instant. It was 4 AM and the U.S. Congress had spent all day sheltering from a terrorist attack, then come back to work to finish affirming for the historical record that Trump was voted out of office. Please have some kind of humanity towards "the politicians."

It's hard to have some humanity for the politicians when the majority of the republicans in the House as well as a handful in the Senate are still pushing the false narrative of a fraudulent election--for their own benefit. (One of my own senators jumped on the bandwagon at the very last minute.) They had a day beyond horrendous, and yet those men and women were still willing to believe Trump was totally blameless for the devastation that occurred.

So for those who were there to do their job, I'm shocked and saddened for what they underwent and proud of their devotion to duty. For the others? Not so much at all.

I’m sorry to hear that one of your senators was among those who acted so shamefully, but I think you may have missed the content of what I was replying to.

I just have no empathy for any of the Republicans. Many of them explicitly backed him; the others kept quiet but did nothing to stop him. Having to listen to somehow like Hawley continue to blather on that night is just teeth-grindingly infuriating ( ... )

Every time--every time I think people will finally see the light, I hear things like the orange anus could very well pardon those insurrectionists, or Matt Goetz, the idiot representative from Florida (fortunately, not mine) who's trying to cut those people some slack. None of them has any empathy, which shouldn't surprise me, considering who and what they are.

You're right, we all need a break. Eleven days.

Right?? I checked the news briefly this morning for about 15 minutes, saw that everything was still rage-making, and have stayed away since. It's much better for my mental health! I'll be thinking good thoughts for your country instead!

No doubt they were stressed and exhausted. I absolutely feel for the Democrats. For the Republicans, I feel nothing. Literally every one of them either implicitly or explicitly backed Trump, and this is what happened because of it. There were people in that mob with tasers and guns and twist-tie handcuffs. Terrifying.

Thinking as if I were one of those politicians, though, I would not feel comfortable returning there unless I had done everything I could do ensure my safety, which would including getting rid of Trump. I realize that impeachment isn't instant, but I just get so damned tired of all the politically correct condemnation statements. How incredibly freeing would it have felt to stand up and just bluntly say, "The President is a malignant narcissistic who just incited a mob to attempt to overthrow the government, and I call on Mike Pence to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment"? At least TRY.

Okay, but that's exactly what all the Democrats have said. Some of them didn't say it until after the sun came up on the 7th instead of at 4 AM on the floor of the House chamber. Is that really so different that it makes you hopeless about the future of America?

No, those were two different thoughts. But today I am avoiding the news and trying to avoid even thinking about how awful things are, never mind trying to explain it. So, I'm just going to end there for the sake of my mental health! :)
