Sometimes things hit hard

and they're not always what you expect to hit hard either. I freely admit that I avoid watching the news because it tends to feed my depression. Since my depression has at times been bad enough to get me contemplating suicide my desire to avoid feeding it is understandable.

When I found out Shane had cancer it hit hard, when he died from the cancer it hit hard. This is something any decent person would understand, even expect.

I don't normally expect to take a psychological blow from reading a book or watching a movie. There are some exceptions, such as anything about the holocaust.

I wasn't expecting it from a graphic novel, especially since I had a decent idea as to the story line having seen the movie. It doesn't surprise me that the book is better, because the book is almost always better.

Unfortunately it hit a couple of my triggers. Two of the things that feed into my despair: a look at some of the more horrible things people do to each other and a sense of inevitability. A suggestion that events proceed along a predetermined path and they will be as they will be because there is no changing them.

Do we have free will, or only the illusion of free will? Did I make a choice to get Watchmen from the library and read it, or was it predestined?
