A Place Called Nexus

I'm trying to solidify a place that has existed in my mind for some time. It has had incarnations in my writing and in free form RPGs I played with Shane. But the details, the form, are chaotic and uncertain. I wish to create something in which Nexus is a key location, whether as the setting, a base of operations or merely a place where people pass through. Possibly each of the above in a different story.

What is already certain:
Nexus is located in a swamp and borders on many different worlds while being part of none.
Nexus Academy is a place where people study many different things.
Nexus Academy was created by scholars seeking to study this unusual connection point between worlds.
Magics that work in any of the worlds connected to Nexus also work within Nexus.
Humans are only one of several sapient species.

Things which depend on the story:
Sometimes Nexus is just the Academy, other times the Academy is part of a city.
When it is part of a city it is either the heart of the city or the city is a major trade center. Though I suppose it could be both depending on how you look at it. A city is often many things.
When the City is a Center of Trade it is often also a center of Diplomacy.
There may be a large river flowing through the city. It is significantly cleaner than the Ankh.
Nexus may be located in The Mists and connected to Avalon.
I've toyed with the idea of Nexus being permanently in twilight. (No not the twilight with sparklepires)
