“Mika-chaaaaan~!” Ugh, it’s him again.
“What.” I coldly turned to Hikaru.
“Why are you so cold to me like that always?” Hikaru pouted.
“Hey, Hika! I’ve been looking all over for you!” Yabu-san came, patting Hika’s shoulder. “Oh, hey, Mika-chan!” Yabu-san noticed me. I felt my heart skip a beat.
“Hi, Yabu-sempai…” I shyly waved at him.
“Hika, we have a photoshoot at 5pm. We should get going.”
“Okay…”
“Mika-chan, we’ll go ahead, okay?” Yabu-san smiled cutely. My heart stopped.
“Ah… okay, byebye!” I cheerfully said, half of my heart feeling sad that Yabu-san had to go.
“Bye, Mika-chaaaaan!” Hikaru shouted. I replied with a scowl.
If you noticed, I find Hikaru REAAAAAAALLY annoying. He gets into my nerves. Ever since I entered this school, he wouldn’t stop annoying the heck out of me. He keeps on asking for my attention like he likes me. I don’t even know. He’s just annoying. I hate him! While Yabu-sempai has been my crush for the longest time. He has the most gorgeous smile. I melt every time I hear my name from his mouth. Sooooooo dreamy.
My daydream was suddenly interrupted by my own grumbling with the annoyance of Hika.
“Is it Hika-chan again?” It was Riho-chan.
“Ugh, don’t even remind me.”
“Ha ha ha! Why do you hate him so much? He didn’t do anything to you, did he?”
“No, I don’t even know. Maybe I would learn to appreciate him more if he stops annoying me like that!” I crossed my arms.
“Maybe you should stop acting like that.”
“Huh?”
“Don’t you get it? I think he likes you!”
“Why would he.”
“Why wouldn’t he?” Riho-chan winked at me.
“But you don’t have proofs!”
“No guy would try so hard to get a girl’s attention the way he does.”
“He’s still annoying!”
“You should treat him nicely. He might actually stop annoying you.”
“Eh…” I looked away and watched Yabu-sempai and Hikaru walking out of the school gate.
Hikaru’s POV
“Ne~, Yabu, I think Mika-chan hates meeee~!”
“Hikaru, that’s because maybe you’re annoying her too much.”
“Eeeeeh? But I just want to be friends with her~!”
“You need to take it easy on her.” Yabu sighed.
Maybe he’s right. I need to go easy on her. But how would I when she doesn’t even bother to notice me? I’ve known her for 3 years and she still wouldn’t even talk to me. Maybe she doesn’t like me?
“Cheer up, Hikaru. We’re here.”
“Right.”
Mika’s POV
I walked towards the lobby of the school with my eyes on my feet.
“Good morning, Mika-chan!” A familiar voice greeted me. I looked up and I saw Yabu-san smiling at me.
“OH! G-Good morning, Yabu-sempai!” My heart was pounding so fast with his eyes squinting straight at me. He was too cute.
“Say, I wanted to ask you something.”
“Eh?” I widened my eyes and I felt my heart stopped for awhile with all these scenarios in my head like Yabu-san asking me out. I was freaking out and Yabu-san finally continued.
“Do you hate Hikaru?”
HUH???? All of a sudden, my images were shattered by the sound of Hikaru’s name flashing through my ears. How did Hikaru even get here? I thought this was about me and you, Yabu-sempai? Well, I THOUGHT. I stopped being delusional and went back to reality. I tried to focus on the question.
“Uhm… well? Hikaru…”
“Hm? Well, if you don’t have an answer, it’s alright.” He smiled, which made it hard for me to focus again.
“Uhhh, well, it’s not that I… okay, I hate how annoying he is. I can’t even explain how I feel towards him.” I fidgeted with my fingers.
Yabu-san laughed at my answer. “I see. Don’t worry, I’ll keep that from him.”
“Uhh… thanks?”
“Ha ha ha, anyway, I’m going back to the classroom. I’ll see you around.”
“Alright, see you!” I watched Yabu-san disappear into the hallway.
What was that about?
The whole day, Hikaru didn’t say “hi” to me nor even look at me. I didn’t even see him the whole day.
“Hikaru hasn’t said ‘hi’ to me today…” I tried to sound casual.
“Aren’t you happy? No one’s annoying you.” One of my best friends and my classmate Anri-chan said, knowing about my confusing disliking for Hikaru.
“Yeah, I just find it… strange.”
“Or maybe you’re just missing him?” Anri-chan said, with a smug on her face.
“Of course not!” Maybe she was right. I think I was beginning to miss him annoying me. I just didn’t want to admit it to myself.
Then, I saw Hikaru with some of his friends, going towards the cafeteria. He was smiling and laughing with his friends. I felt my heart skip a beat, seeing him smile that. Our eyes met even from afar. I tried to wave, hoping he would say ‘hi’ to me the way he usually does. But I felt like I got stabbed when he didn’t do so. I was feeling upset and began to realize I was starting to like him.
I was stading around the hallway after class, hoping I would be able to see Hikaru. Then I saw Riho-chan coming down the hallway.
“Mika-chan, you’re still here!”
“Uhh… yeah, I was waiting for…”
“Yabu-kun?”
“Errr… not quite.”
“Eh? Who else would you wait for if not Yabu-kun? …WAIT, OH MY GOSH! Don’t tell me…”
“…” I looked away, feeling my face turning red.
“I KNEW YOU’D LIKE HIM!”
“Eh?! Why?”
“Instincts? I bet you were dying to talk to him because he didn’t mind you all day, right?”
“Why do you know that?!”
“I told you, instincts~!”
“Err…”
“Are you confessing to him?”
“I don’t intend to…”
“You should~!”
“Eh…”
“Hika’s just in their classroom. He should be alone by now. You should drop by!” Riho-chan winked at me.
“But that would be too embarrassing…”
“Don’t worry~! No one else is there now! Come on! Go and see him!” She pushed me towards Hika’s classroom.
I tried my best to not make any noise to be unnoticed. I watched Hikaru cleaning the board. His hair was brightly lit with brown, almost gold with the sunset. His eyes sparkled, they made my heart melt. I fought with myself whether or not to go inside the room. A part of me convinced me to go in, but a part of me held back.
Before I decided, it was already too late because the door opened and I saw Hikaru standing right before me.
“Mika-chan?” He was surprised and a little confused to see me.
“Uhhh…” I didn’t know what to say.
“If you’re looking for Yabu, he already went home.” Hikaru casually said and passed across me. I felt my heart shatter that I couldn’t say anything. I felt Hikaru just kept walking towards the almost-darkened corridor. The sun was starting to set and I felt like everything around me suddenly became gloomy. I felt like my heart grew heavy and it hurt so much. My legs wouldn’t move to even bring myself to turn around to stop him. I heard his footsteps kept going and it was getting farther and farther.
With all my might, I shouted, “HIKARU!” My voice trembled with fear and rejection. This might have been the first and the last time I would call him by that. I felt like I was going to break into tears any moment. I was still facing towards the classroom door. I couldn’t turn my head with fear that Hikaru might not come back and would continue walking. I saw the end before my eyes and that made me even more scared to turn around to see if he was there. His footsteps stopped for awhile. And I heard the footsteps again. This time, it was getting nearer. The footsteps stopped and suddenly, I was wrapped around Hikaru’s arms.
“That was the first time you ever called me ‘Hikaru’.” I couldn’t see him, but I felt him smiling.
“Uhm…”
“Say it again.”
“Huh?”
“My name.”
“What’s wrong with you?” I whacked his arm with embarrassment and he let go of me from his embrace.
“It’s just that I never heard you say my name. That’s why I wanted to hear it again.” Hikaru was smiling. I couldn’t help, but give him what he wanted again.
“Hikaru…”
“I can’t believe it! You’re actually calling me that~!” Hikaru embraced me again.
“E-Eh?!”
“I was waiting for this day for you to finally call me ‘Hikaru’.”
“Oh,”
“But why all of a sudden?” He let go of me.
“Uhm… well, that’s because…” I looked around, trying to look for a good excuse.
“Did you realize you like me?” Hikaru nudged me with a smug.
“BAKA! “ I hit him on the arm. I was turning red. “To tell you the truth… yes… I used to hate you so much ‘cause I thought you were annoying. But I guess I was just denying to myself that I’m actually… in love with you.” I sheepishly admitted with a small voice.
Hikaru took my face in his hands and leaned to kiss me. I felt like my heart was going to explode.
“I’m glad you do. I’ve always liked you ever since I got to know you.” He smiled softly and he was looking straight through my eyes.
“You did…?”
Hikaru nodded. “I wanted to know you more, but I knew you didn’t like me so much. And I knew you liked Yabu.” Hikaru casually laughed.
“YOU KNEW?!” I suddenly felt frustrated.
Hikaru laughed. “Don’t worry, I didn’t tell him~!”
“Ugh, I can’t believe you!”
“Well, you’re mine now, right?”
I tip-toed to re ach for a kiss. Hikaru embraced me tightly.
Yabu-san, then, popped out with Riho-chan.
“YOU LIKED ME?!” Yabu-san shouted.
“Uhh…” I looked around, trying to avoid the question.
“I guess not anymore, Yabu-kun.” Riho-chan patted his shoulder with a grin.
“She’s in love with me now~!” Hiakru put his arm around me. I looked away, blushing.
“Come on, let’s leave the love birds alone now, shall we?” Riho-chan smiled at Yabu-san.
“Alright, let’s go home together, shall we?” Yabu-san smiled back at Riho-chan.
“Okay, let’s go~!” Riho-chan grabbed the arm of Yabu-san and left right away. In the blink of an eye, they were gone.
“Let’s go home too!” Hikaru smiled at me. I nodded shyly. Hikaru took my hands and held it tightly as we walked towards the corridor.
