“Mica-chaaaaaan~! What can we do this weekend? Why don’t we go out with the others?” Hikaru pulled the sleeve of my uniform as I was making my way to the library.
“But I have to study~! Exams are coming!” I reminded Hikaru-kun.
“But you’ve been studying for the past few days. We don’t even get to hang out anymore.” Hikaru pouted.
“Err… Okay, I’ll try my best this weekend.” I promised Hikaru.
“Yey~! Great! Okay, I’ll go ahead now. I have to practice with the band. Good luck with your studies!” Hikaru ruffled my hair. That flattered me a bit.
“Good luck with the rehearsal!” I watched Hikaru run off down the stairs.
Hikaru and I have been very close friends. I just can’t find the time to spend with him lately because of our busy schedules. I’ve been spending my afternoons in the school library to study because studying at home doesn’t seem to be any good at all while Hikaru always has rehearsals with his band or a shooting for his drama.
Feeling a little upset about not being able to spend time with Hiakru, I went inside the library.
I went to my usual spot where I usually study on the corner near the window.
Until the closing time of the library, I tried to figure out one of the physics problems, but I still couldn’t get it right. So I borrowed some of their books and tried to figure it out at home.
3 days later, I totally forgot that the books that I borrowed from the library wer due on that day. I rushed to the library to return the books because the library was almost closing.
When I got to the library, there was no one left. But the library was still open, so I thought this was the best time to study even for awhile. I went to my usual spot, but unusually, it was taken.
A guy with bright, brown hair was sleeping on top of his book. I stood there for awhile, thinking if I should wake him up to tell him that he was at the library and it was almost closing time. But I hesitated because I wasn’t sure who he was.
Because I was carrying so much things, I accidentally dropped one of the thick, heavy books that I was carrying and made a loud noise. For some strange reason, I felt nervous. The guy sleeping on the desk got up.
“Hm?...” I picked up the book quickly and turned to the guy to see who it was. It was Takaki-sempai, one of the classmates and a good friend of Hikaru.
“Uh… sorry… I made such a loud noise.” I sheepishly said.
“No, it’s okay…” He sleepily muttered. “I forgot I was in the library. I feel asleep while studying.”
I nodded in response.
“The library’s closing, I think…” I said, not knowing what to say.
“Yeah, we should leave.” Takaki-sempai stood up. I left the books on the desk of the librarian and we both made our way out of the library.
“I’m glad you came here.” Takaki-sempai smiled at me. I felt my heart skip a beat because of his charming smile.
“Eh?” I suddenly got lost in thought.
“If you weren’t there, they would have left me in the library and locked me in there.” Takaki-sempai laughed. I laughed lightly with him. “You’re Mika-chan, right?”
My name coming from his deep voice made my heart melt.
“Yeah…” I tried not to look into his eyes to keep myself focused. Takaki-sempai smiled at me. My heart stopped for a second.
“Oh, hey! You guys are still here!” Hikaru came walking towards us.
“Oh, Hikaru, we were just about to leave.” Takaki-sempai turned to Hikaru.
“Oh, and what are you doing here?”
“I was studying.” Takaki-sempai showed his books to Hikaru.
“You were studying?” Hikaru laughed.
“Why are you laughing at me?”
“Mika-chan, you’re going home too?” Hikaru ignored Takaki-sempai. I nodded in response.
“Then why don’t we go home together?” Hikaru cheerfully asked me.
“Yeah, sure.” I smiled at Hikaru. Then I turned to Takaki-sempai. “How about you, sempai?”
“I have a different direction.” Takaki-sempai scratched his cheek.
“Oh…” I felt a little disappointed.
We separated ways with Takaki-sempai when we got out of the school gate. I and Hikaru walked for a few minutes in silence. All I could think of was Takaki-sempai’s smile and his deep voice.
“Mika-chan? Are you okay? You’ve been so quiet.” Hikaru asked me as we kept walking.
“Huh? Oh…” I snapped out of it. “Sorry… I was just thinking about a lot of things.”
“Hm? What’s wrong?” Hikaru topped walking to look at me.
I blushed and looked away.
“Mika-chan, are you hiding anything from me?”
“N-No!” I started walking. hikaru had a puzzled look on his face.
Hikaru’s POV
Mika-chan kept walking ahead of me as I watched her back. I wonder what’s up with her? I feel like she’s hiding something from me… should I tell her now how I really feel about her? But how does she feel about me? It would be so uncool if I get rejected.
“Hikaru?” Mika-chan turned to me. I noticed how far she was ahead of me.
“Oh…” I ran to catch up with her.
The next day after classes were over, I decided to drop by the library to see if Mika-chan was there, studying. I quietly opened the door of the library. There were only a few people. I walked around the library to look for her. I saw her in the corner of the library. I saw Yuya, sitting in front of her. I saw her in the corner of the library. I saw Yuya sitting in front of her. They were talking and quietly laughing together. I saw how happy Mika-chan looked. I decided to just leave.
After rehearsal, I made my way out of the school and go straight home.
“Hikaru!” I turned to see who it was. It was Mika-chan. She was running after me. Yuya was standing behind her.
“You’re about to go home?” Mika-chan smiled at me. I felt warmth in my heart when I saw her smile.
“Yeah,” I lightly smiled.
“Then let’s go home together!” Mika-chan grabbed my arm. When we went out of the school gate, Mika-chan turned to Yuya.
“Bye, sempai!” She cheerfully waved at Yuya, who was walking on a different direction. Yuya stopped walking and turned to face us. Yuya smiled and waved at Mika-chan.
“Bye, Mika-chan.” Yuya looked at her, then turned to me. “Bye, Hikaru.”
“Bye, Yuya.” I lightly waved.
We were walking in silence and I tried to stay calm. “Mika-chan?”
“Hm?” Mika-chan turned and smiled at me. She looked happy.
“There’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you.” I stopped walking and looked her straight in the eye.
“What is it?” Mika-chan stared back at me.
“I thought I should tell… how I really feel.” I looked away for awhile.
“Hikaru?” Mika-chan was still staring at me.
“Mika-chan, I’ve… always liked you.” I wrapped my arms around her.
“Huh? You…” Mika-chan widened her eyes. She stared at me, surprised. Then, she broke free from my embrace and she looked down.
“Hikaru, I…”
“You like Yuya?” I stared at her. I knew I shouldn’t have asked the obvious question. I know I was just hurting myself.
Mika’s POV
I shyly nodded and looked away. Then I glanced at Hikaru’s eyes. It crushed my heart to see the pain in his eyes.
“I’m… sorry…” That was all I could say.
Hikaru forced a smile. “You don’t have to apologize.”
We both didn’t know what to say. I stepped forward and hugged him. I wrapped my arms around his waist because he was so tall. We stood there for awhile in silence, not knowing what to say to each other. Hikaru pushed me away gently.
“Sorry, I… don’t want this to be harder.” Hikaru was looking down. I couldn’t see his face and I wasn’t sure if what I saw was true, but I noticed his cheek was wet. I felt broken, but I wasn’t sure how to make him feel better.
“Can we still be best friends?” My voice shook.
Hikaru looked up at me and forced a smile. But tears were falling down his cheek. “Of course.”
Seeing him like that made my heart pour.
The next day, I was heading to my classroom, wondering how to face Hikaru after rejecting his feelings. But I didn’t wonder for long.
“Mika-chan! Good morning!” Hikaru came, running after me. He was smiling like he always does.
“Oh, good morning, Hikaru…” I lightly smiled. Maybe he was feeling better?
After school, I went to the library, hoping Takaki-sempai was there. just as I thought, Takaki-sempai was there. but this time, he was sitting with a girl next to him. It was a girl from his class. I felt my heart shatter into pieces. The girl was tall, long haired, and she was really pretty. She looked like a model. Takaki-sempai was smiling and laughing with her. Takaki-sempai saw me. Our eyes met and I felt like breaking into tears. I decided to run away.
I made my way out of the empty hallway.
“Mika-chan!” I heard Takaki-sempai calling out to me. I felt my heart so heavy with pain and jealousy. I kept running until I got caught up. Takaki-sempai grabbed my other arm.
“Mika-chan!” I looked down at my own feet. He was staring at me.
“Who was she?” Stupid me. Why do I even bother? Wasn’t it obvious? I bet that was someone he likes or even his girlfriend.
“ ‘she’?” Takaki-sempai looked confused.
“The pretty girl in the library!” I struggled to break free from his grip. Suddenly, Takaki-sempai started laughing.
“She’s my classmate! She was just tutoring me in math!”
“You don’t like her?” I pouted.
“No! besides, she likes Hikaru!” He continued laughing. I widened my eyes. Someone like her?! She likes Hikaru?! I was surprised, but I still kept pouting.
“You’re so cute~!” Takaki-sempai poked my cheek. That made my heart skip a beat. I was caught off guard.
“Are you jealous?” Takaki-sempai bent down to look straight into my eyes. He was grinning and it was cute. I couldn’t resist his eyes. I quickly looked away so I wouldn’t get caught blushing.
“I-I’m not jealous!” I denied.
Takaki-sempai held my cheeks and leaned to kiss my forehead. My heart was pounding and I felt like everything around me stopped for a second. He, then, stared at me with a bright smile. I blushed like mad and tried not to look at him.
“You’re so cuuuuuuuuuute~!” He hugged me again.
“I’m not cute…” I sweat-dropped.
“Mika-chan, can you be my girlfriend?”
“EEEEEEHHHH~?!!!” I couldn’t help but shout.
“I’m serious. Mika-chan, I like you.” Sempai’s face became serious. I knew he meant what he said. He was blushing a little. He was adorable.
“I… I…” I kept stuttering and I sheepishly nodded, Takaki-sempai gave a huge smile.
“Call me ‘Yuya’.”
