Chrysler

On my way to work I nudged the side of the entrance to the parking lot and when I got out the rear driver side tire was hissing. Air was leaking out the side of the nozzle where the rim meets the rubber. I've nudged curbs before and this has never happened ( Read more... )

You can get tires a lot cheaper than that.

The cheapest they make for this model, 2005 PT Cruiser GT, is literally $183.

Oh lame. It must be because of how heavy those cars are.

What were you pricing them out by? Usually you can just select the size and end up with a number of options. When I was pricing out tires for my mom's 05 Accord, the factory-spec ones (which she ended up getting) were $130/ea but there were other brands were about the same for $80/ea.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the price varies with tire store...For example, Costco will only sell you what the car comes with. A quick poke on Tirerack.com shows BFGoodrich tires for your car at about $79/pc.

wow. that is indeed horrible! I'm waiting for something like that to happen with me, because one of my four tires is super old, and the rubber is starting to crack... guess it's just a matter of time.

I suggest you buy your next set of tires from Tires Plus. Say what you want, but if you get a flat for any reason - your fault or not - they will replace the tire for as long as you keep coming back for the price of mounting and labor, which often ends up being $60 or so...

As far as the spare goes... I limped my car around on a spare for about 2 weeks or so, carefully ensuring the pressure was acceptable all the time, and that I never exceeded the suggested 50mph, which made me a real treat on any freeway. So you can probably get away with it for a while, at least.

Actually, after I'd written this, I realized that I have that exact coverage. When the last tire exploded, my dad helped out and sprang for the replacement plan. When I take it in I'm going to have them look at one of the other tires, too, which has been mysteriously leaking air.

Effing Christ. If a set of tires costs $800, you'd think they'd last you a while.

Ugh, sorry to hear it, Seph. I always seem to hear bad things about PT Cruisers. Maybe they're cursed.

You should be fine with that spare for at least a couple of days if necessary.

Chrysler is cursed. Well, I should take that back. This car IS a nice car. But the tires are utter shit. Before this I drove a LeBaron convertible that leaked when it rained (fun stuff when you have to drive 50 miles to go to school). The thing had numerous other problems on top of that. I vowed never to drive another Chrysler again.. but I can't say no to a free car.
