There was an interminable silence in the month after Jay’s departure. Then, like the first drops of an IV, Taecyeon started receiving a slow trickle of texts that sent a confusing mixture of adrenaline and numbing anesthetic coursing through his veins.
Jay’s texts were innocuous - flippant remarks about the Seattle weather or his mom’s cooking - but Taec’s heart started doing somersaults whenever his phone buzzed, even if it was usually just the members asking about their schedules.
Taec didn’t answer the texts, but it wasn’t like he wasn’t reading them. He’d read each over a dozen times, enough that if they were real, paper letters, they’d be crumpled and dog-eared, smudged with hamburger grease. It wasn’t his fault; he felt out of his depth, sick with the reality of the situation. He made up excuses. He thought, I’ll catch him up when he gets back.
When Jung Wook tells them that Jay isn’t going to be returning to 2PM, Taec leaves the room, self-recrimination the bitter medicine in his mouth. In the hall, he opens his phone. There are thirty-two texts from Jay in his inbox, but Taec knows that now it’s too late to reply to a single one.
