round 04, challenge three: drabble eleven

this is how an earthquake happens:
the fastest are p-waves - sonic waves, really - they're always first, and suddenly the termites in your walls are doing an elaborate perpendicular tango, and outside, pigeons fly in some fucking crazy formation like a harbinger of the apocalypse, and if your dog's faithful, it could be at your bedside, nudging you awake, whimpering danger, danger - and all across the country, seismographs are flipping a shit.
then come s-waves. the legs of furniture scratch tenuous shapes into hardwood floors; clocks sway and glasses clink.
next, r-waves: books leap like suicide divers from shelves; sidewalks spill and roll like ocean waves. cars swerve and trains derail and bridges collapse. the earth screams and groans.
last are l-waves. the asphalt of your streets shatters to pieces; you were once on the eleventh floor and now you are on the sixth, suspended above a heap of teetering rubble as the world breaks into chaos. l-waves are also called love waves.
after he says what he says and the segment airs, there are fifty-four pages of death threats on tudou. zhou mi insists on reading each one.
