So the 日本語能力試験 came and went, and it wasn't as bad as I had imagined, yet somehow it seemed worse. The kanji/vocab section was pretty easy, the listening was ridiculously simple, but ooooooh, the reading and grammar section. There was pain. SO MUCH PAIN. I barely had enough time to go back and ponder through all the questions I had skipped, but I did successfully finish. When the time was up, a resounding groan that sounded like the pain of death could be heard from everyone in the room, so at least I know it wasn't just me. I guess I'll find out in 3 months if I passed or not.
The funniest thing about taking the test was how the station was absolutely flooded with foreigners. Barely a Japanese person in sight. As is to be expected, most were Korean and Chinese, with a fair amount of Indians and Southeast Asians in the mix. Most the Westerners were taking 3 and 4-kyuu, but besides me there was two other white chicks in the same testing room. The Korean girl who I sat next to gave me her phone number, and it would have been gret to talk with her more, but I'm sort of apprehensive talking to Koreans in Japanese because their accent is difficult to understand. :/
Now that I'm free from studying for the test (though my Japanese studies will continue, of course!!), my next task is to memorize a whole bunch of Japanese songs to freak the hell out of my students during karaoke after the Christmas party. So..!!
Anyone have any good mp3s they could share that would be good for karaoke?? I don't know many recent Japanese songs, and the ones I can actually sing span about as far as Aiko and The Blue Hearts. I'm actually a terrible singer, so something with novelty is a good choice.
