Back in the day (what day - Ed.) I used to work Thursday night, Friday night and all day Saturday on the wines and spirits section at the local Gateway (probably not much bigger than a Tesco Metro these days). That included two Christmases.

We only had a small store room and from about late October onwards it was only used for the expensive stuff and literally stacked floor to ceiling, front to back. The only way to get at anything not right at the front was to climb on top and squeeze between the top boxes and the ceiling. I think we'd heard about health and safety but held no truck with it. Also, I was fit and slim so a *very* long time ago. :-)

*g* I can actually really believe that. The aim, apparently, is to ensure that people can actually move around in the back room in stores. And then stores do stupid things like order enough fresh pizzas to fill the entire store, floor to ceiling, five times over.

I still don't think that retail companies believe in health and safety, unless you're the worker attempting some dangerous procedure who gets seriously injured when five cartons of baked beans land on you.
