Apocalyptic tales

As far as horror tropes go, zombie stories aren't really for me. (They're depressing, you can't really negotiate with zombies, and then there's the unfortunate possible subtext which Joss Whedon lampooned when making his Mitt Romney spot.) But

Season two is generally felt to be a low point for The Walking Dead. Thus far season three has been a huge improvement, with more showing, less telling, and some great zombie-killing action. Sadly, the racial stuff doesn't get much better.

Interestingly, with the death of Shane, Daryl seems to have become everybody's favourite. There was a recent thing he did (which it's just possible you haven't had spoiled by the internet, so I won't explain) which apparently led to a lot of exploding ovaries (people made gifs about it and everything).

You mean Daryl wasn't before? I'd have thought at the latest when he brought flowers to Carol and searched for Sophia.

... Sorry, I misread your post as saying Shane/Glenn seemed to be the popular pairing. I have no idea why I would do that.

But yeah, Daryl's got the whole brooding, damaged, badass and protective thing going on. Plus the bike.

A quick look at the fanfic section tells me he gets paired with Glenn a lot, which I find baffling - did they ever share a scene (in the sense of speaking to each other?

My brief recollection is that they do in Season 1 (when they go back into town after Merle), but not much direct interaction in season 2.

I don't read TWD fic, so I'm surprised to hear that the pairing writers are driven to is Glenn/Daryl. I would have guessed Rick/Daryl with all the material the show started giving us in that dynamic starting in season two, and especially in season three (Rick clearly makes Daryl want to be a better man!). I suppose in one sense, it's a bit refreshing. Fanfic writers can tend to be racially myopic.

After two seasons, I still couldn't tell you anything about T-Dog

Indeed. It became something of a running gag in fandom that T-Dog has survived way longer than any expected but you can count his number of lines on your hands each season. It's also pretty sad.

Result of marathoning s2: okay, they should have stuck with the ( ... )

Actually, my own guess would have been Rick/Shane, since they have canonically a very intense relationship, and "best friends becoming rivals yet also continuing to love each other along with the new enmity" usually leads to slash.

Good to hear about s3 and the pacing!

And how perfect that M makes that comment about never having been a very good shot late in Skyfall. The universe, aligning ;)

Indeed. :)

I have never seen Walking Dead (I read a couple volumes of the comic and wasn't very interested in it -- it's well done, just not my thing, and I understand the show diverges from the comic pretty early on). However, re: characters of color, I believe Michonne (who according to the wiki showed up in season 2 finale) becomes a regular in season 3. I don't know about TV Michonne, but my impression is that comic book Michonne is one of the most popular characters.

There was a mysterious shadowy figure (face not revealed, presumably because the role wasn't cast yet) in the last but one scene. I'm assuming that's Michonne, then.

Ahh, that explains it.

Admittedly I mostly know Michonne from BAMF Girls Club

Not to get into any spoilers for S3... But TV Michonne, from what I understand, has gotten mixed responses so far, with a lot of people complaining -- reasonably, I think -- that she looks bad-ass but has had zero character development, or even characterization, so far. I'm not really in touch with the fandom, but I have heard a few people complaining that she's much less awesome than the comics version, sadly.

(One of these days, I will get around to reading the comics. I've got a giant omnibus volume of them just sitting around waiting for me.)

Ah, The Walking Dead! That's really kind of an odd show for me, because it's a very rare example of one where, for a long time, at least, I managed to enjoy it despite having no great interest in or any real liking for any of the characters. But then, I do like zombie stories, and TWD does the zombie genre pretty well, being genuinely scary, with some interesting plot twists and a real sense that anything could happen to anybody at any time.

I recently mentioned on my LJ, though, that I was developing something of a soft spot for Daryl. In truth, that's an understatement; I've really become quite smitten with the guy. Which is almost a little embarrassing to admit... He is a fan favorite, apparently, and for good reasons, but not so much the kind I usually go for. But he does have that combination of extreme competence and a certain endearing kind of emotional damage, and, unlike the rest of this group, he is not inclined to stand around bickering about everything. And yet, he's a surprisingly good team player with all those ( ... )

Nothing wrong with occasionally loving the fandom favourite. :) You still have your indie cred, given Stark.

it is mercifully impossible to smoosh Daryl/Carol together into any kind of cutesy pairing name. :)

Caryl? Darol? Also, I thought the ultimate challenge in this regard were Katniss/Peeta from The Hunger Games(between "Peeniss" and "Katpee", portmanteaus are kind of out), but recently I discovered someone came up with calling the pairing "Toast". (Which at least is funny, sort of.)

I'm OK with being into the fandom favorite, but I really don't usually go for the rough-and-tumble guys. :)

Caryl? Darol?

Neither of which works if you pronounce them, 'cause they just end up sounding like the character's individual names. Possibly from now on, I will stick to only shipping people whose names rhyme. :)

*snort* But if people these days sometime refer to K/S as "Kock," I'm not sure I'd rule out "Peeniss."

but recently I discovered someone came up with calling the pairing "Toast". (Which at least is funny, sort of.)

OK, that's actually rather clever. :)

I was confused about the whole 'Daryl' thing because I didn't remember him at all from the parts of the comic I'd read, and it turns out he was invented for the TV show. Maybe this is another thing I will swear to watch when it's all over and then not actually do it.

Dude, actresses the world over should be clamoring to look like Romola Garai. She is and has always been beautiful. Pfft.
