Not so perfect porn

May 03, 2011 22:13

Hunh. So I discovered last night that one thing that can make me completely bored with porn is if it's too perfect. Like ... when every single sex scene leads to the most mind-blowing and amazing orgasms EVER, and the participants never take a wrong step but read each other's bodies perfectly at all times (D/S scenes seem particularly prone to this ( Read more... )

rants, meta

i don't like perfect anything. if the romance is too perfect, their understanding too perfect, it's damned boring. because people are interesting, and people are never perfect.

Yes, this. I had a rant a few years back about happy endings that are too happy, which was sort of along the same lines. They're boring and they make my teeth hurt from the sap. I like characters and relationships that feel real to me, and that means flaws and problems I can relate to in some form or fashion. (And, alas, I can't relate to perfect sex all the time, LOL.)

which is why a lot of the fics i think i'll like are actually not that satisfying, while those that hold back and make me earn my keep (make me interpret, don't deliver all of the goods at the same time, have emotional restraint) are the ones that i actually go back to reread and become my favorites.

*ponders* Now I'm thinking about the stories I read over and over again, what it is about them that makes them so appealing. I am with you in that many of them are rich and layered, and reward multiple reads. Others nail a relationship dynamic in just the way I like for whatever reason. I will have to think about this more when I'm not so tired.

by the way, do you read original fic?

I do, though not particularly often since I read in multiple fandoms too and there are only so many hours in the day! I follow the_slash_pile and try to check out anything there that is complete and sounds interesting. (There are an awful lot of 80-billion-word vampire/werewolf/etc. WiP's recced there, and those I give a miss, LOL.)

write meta on it. for real. i'd read the hell out of it.

lmao yes, i give those a wide berth. like, i walk on the other side of the internet just so i don't have to encounter them head on.

you should read "Captive Prince." i really think you'd love it. this from someone who tends to hate slavefic because of how the characters are usually types, how badly authors tend to deal with the issue of slavery and-- yeah, plenty of other reasons. CP though is REALLY GOOD.

I'll see what I can do. :-)

I can go either way on slave fic -- I have a massive hurt/comfort kink, which some slave fic hits nicely, but you're right, it can go very badly in the wrong hands. I'll give Captive Prince a try -- got a link?

linky.

"We hear that your Prince," said Lady Margaret, "keeps his own harem. These slaves will please any traditionalist, but I have asked Adrastus to prepare something special in addition, a personal gift for your Prince from the King. A gem in the rough, as it were."

"His Majesty has already been so generous," said the Ambassador of Rabat.

They strolled the length of the viewing gallery. The Ambassador had dined on mouth-watering spiced meat wrapped in grape leaves, the noon-day heat fanned away from his reclining form by attentive slaves. He felt generously willing to admit that this barbaric country had its charms. The food was rustic but the slaves were impeccable: faultlessly obedient and trained to efface and anticipate, nothing like the spoiled pets at the court of Rabat.

The gallery was decorated by two dozen slaves on display. All were either nude or only barely clad in gauzy silks. Around their necks, the slaves wore gold collars decorated with precious stones, rubies and tanzanite, and on their wrists golden gauntlets that mimicked wrist-cuffs. These were purely ornamental. The slaves were unshackled to demonstrate their willing submissiveness.

They were to be a gift from the King of Akielos to the Regent of Rabat--a highly generous gift. The gold collars alone were worth a small fortune, while the slaves were surely some of the finest in Akielos. Privately, the Ambassador had already earmarked one of the palace slaves for his personal use, a demure youth with a beautifully slender waist and below that curves that looked as sweet as peaches.

hope you like it! <3

Thanks! :-) It's a WIP, I see. Does book one stand on its own? Ie, does it feel reasonably resolved without having to go on to book two?

*gasps*

You're not reading Captive Prince??? But, but, everyone is reading it....

And nope, I'd say book one will not close the thing for you. It's very slow-burning.

Now, if you're wondering why I am reading a slow-burning WIP, I'm right there with you, wondering at myself :D

naw, not everyone is. plenty of people are turned off by it being a slavefic and WIP.

(and you're reading it 'cause it's damned good and you know it. :DDDDD)

You're right, and I'm one of those people usually skipping slavefics and religiously avoiding WIPs. Hence my head-scratching :)

I'm pretty sure I've heard of it... *peeks out from under rock*

I looked at all the installments that are planned for this thing, and considering that author started it back in 2008, this thing ain't gonna be done for years, am I right?

I'll...think about giving it a shot. ;-)

the thing with CP, is that it's so addictive you can't ever feel resolved, because the writing is so good, the story so compelling, you want more of it.

it's a WIP and i hate them with a burning passion, but i feel like the fic is totally worth the pain of waiting for an update.

I will add it to the "fic to read" pile and see what happens! :-)
