Have you seen anything about
this yet? My knee jerk response to reading this is to question if the US is becoming China. This is a bill that would give the president the ability to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any "critical" information network "in the interest of national security." Which at first glance seems harmless enough, except--who decides what's "critical"? And what if this new adviser decides that me bitching on LJ is against "the interest of national security"? Granted, I don't think little me is going to garner any attention, but the fact of the matter is, we don't KNOW.
Here's the scariest part though..."this bill also grants the Secretary of Commerce "access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access."
Hey---all you people who FREAKED THE FUCK OUT about "illegal wire taps" where are you screaming about this one?
So, what do you think? Are you planning on e-mailing your senators and congressperson about this bill?
I wasn't happy about the stupid wire taps, but this, this terrifies me. The way the bill is written there is so much leeway in what the government can do.
