Unpopular viewpoint under the cut.
California upheld Prop 8. It was a voted on initiative and it should stand as is. Not that Californians can't change their minds, but it needs to be done via ballot initiative.
Also, I'm a little sick and tired of hearing "it's not fair". Tell me, please, where it says, ANYWHERE, in ANY STATE that you have the right to marry the person you love? As a woman, I can marry a man. Any woman can marry any man. Nowhere does it say I can "marry the person I love".
That being said, I don't think it's right for the government to be involved in adults' private lives. I believe you should be able to be with who you want. I also thing the word "marriage" should be completely removed from all governmental forms/laws/etc. Everyone should have a civil union. Period. Marriage is largely a religious term historically and has no business in Government. Legal Union, private marriage. I realize that doesn't come out as clearly as I want. EXAMPLE-My friends T(female) and B(male) went to city hall. That should be a Legal/Civil Union. My husband and I were married by a priest. So we have a Legal/Civil Union in the eyes of the state and also got "married" per our particular religion.
Also, I'm sick of people thinking their opinion is by far superior to everyone else's. Obviously, a lot of people in California don't agree with each other. I don't agree with the people who voted against Prop 8 but I'm so tired of the vitriol against these people. I don't agree, I don't think homosexuality is wrong or bad or evil or a choice. But that's what I believe. I also don't think that the people who don't believe the same thing I do are, for the most part, malicious, evil nasty people. Misguided in their beliefs--I think so but that's the beauty of this country.
The hate spewed from either side is equally disgusting to me. Respect needs to happen both ways. I think people who voted for Prop 8 were wrong and I think they need to learn to respect people and their differences. That being said, the people who marched on churches and screamed obscenities are just as guilty of lack of respect.
I was all over the place on this. Basically, I wish we could all just get along :-P
