Question, how do you move from one city to another? Like, I mean, all your books and personal things (well, maybe you've got a tv and a blender and stuff like that), do you hire a company to move them from one city to the next and just kind of wait for them on the other end? I really have no idea ( Read more... )

I have friends with pickup trucks. And I never moved more than a couple of hours from wherever I was.

Sorry, dude.

Depends on how much stuff and money you have.

If you have money, and a lot of stuff, you might hire a company to move you. If you don't have a lot of stuff, or you don't have a lot of money, you can rent a truck (see uhaul.com). Or if you really don't have a lot of money, you find a friend with a truck or minivan. Ohh, and pods.com. It's like a mix. THey bring you a pod, and you pack it, and then they load it on a truck and move it, and then you unpack it at your destination.

This pod thing sounds really cool. And I'm assuming Seth has some money, maybe not a lot, but enough? I'll check it out. Thanks, babe!

Also, I've added more information in my post. Thanks!

It depends on how far you're going and if you have people to help you.

My friend was moving from San Franscisco out to my area in Philly, so she shipped most of her stuff via UPS to my house and I held it for her until she got out her.

Usually, people rent a U-Haul truck (since you can rent them in one place and return it elsewhere) and handle it themselves.

Moving companies are mad expensives even for close moves, so if you're moving cities, I doubt you'd use that.

Hmm. Seth's moving from Providence to Berkeley, and, well, he's lived in Providence the four years of school and about four or five more months. How much stuff would he have? I'm not sure. He's rented a small place the last year and a half, two years, lived alone. So maybe he bought a tv and and kitchen stuff and god knows what else.

But he hasn't spoken much to Ryan in the last years, so that's not an option. And I think he wants to make it on his own, except for the fact that he's reaching out to Ryan at the same time. Damn it. I need to you read the story and give me a feel of it. *g*

I'm guessing then that Seth would probably sell most of his furniture in Providence and just take what he can pack up his car with to drive across country to Berkeley. That would make the most sense.

Send me what you have and I'll read it, darling!

I agree- he'd sell the TV, blender, and any furniture (like couch, bed, etc) and pack everything into his car and drive. And then buy new stuff when he gets to CA.

Back in April, I moved from New York to Austin, TX. I had a lot of stuff so I used a mover. I went with a well known mover because some of the cheaper ones don't tell you some of the information you would want to know.

If you don't have tons of stuff, you may want to do it yourself. By the way, if you're move is work related, there are big tax benefits if you qualify!

Feel free to email me directly or just comment with any questions!

Was it very expensive, the movers? I mean, would Seth, after four years of college (and about a year or so of actually working) and five months after graduation, be able to aford it? *ponders*

Nah, he left one job and is moving to Berkeley for another one, a better paying one (he says, but I don't believe him, I think he just wanted to be closer to Ryan), but, like, could the company give him an incentive to move? Or like, an advance on payment so he can move? Would Seth ask for one? *confused*

The movers were a bit expensive that is for sure but I had a lot of stuff (I don't recall the amount but I'm thinking around $3K including packing supplies, tip and my own travel expenses). My movers charged by weight and I had a lot of books ( ... )

That totally, totally works.

So, I could have Seth send his things through a movers, but put them in storage somewhere, and he can maybe then unpack them from storage, then forcing Ryan to help him unpack? That's great.

Well, what if Seth really wanted to find a job in Berkeley and called in a few favors to get that job? I'm assuming if the job was open anyway, they could give him at least a percentaje of the moving incentive, right? Hmm. That works.

Thanks so much darling!

depends on how fair and how much stuff you have. I just shipped all the stuff that didn't fit in my luggage. My friends drove a Uhaul trailer when they needed to move to a different state.

The thing about driving the uhaul, is that it kills my idea of Seth asking Ryan to pick him up, and then kinda forcing him to help him unpack what he's already had moved to the apartment. Besides, this is Seth, I can't see him driving a uhaul from Providence to Berkeley. *g*
