Wow, I'd forgotten how annoying Smallville can be with their Don't Show, Tell! approach to character development. Lana is strong! And uncompromising! You know this because they keep telling you over and over! *gags* Jonathan Kent is so frickin' annoying. Thankfully, Martha continues to be way more awesome than her corn-fed, platitude-spouting husband. And Lois Lane is ♥♥♥.
Seriously, there's such a stark difference between the writing for Lois and the writing for Lana. With Lana, Al & Miles are so busy keeping her out of the dirt and muck, putting her on a pedestal, that they forget she's supposed to be a real girl. With Lois? Yeah, she's a bit stiff and paint-by-numbers in a couple of places, possibly the actress getting comfortable with the role, but look at how she moves, how she feels. Look at her doing stuff in a practical, no-nonsense way, trying to get justice for Chloe, annoying people and speaking her mind, having a sense of humour. She doesn't make a big production out of her life or her priorities, but she's passionate and messy and fun.
I do enjoy Lana/Jason to an extent, mostly because Jensen Ackles injects goofy humour into yet another Lana drama. Too bad about the second half of S4.
That said, I'm still skipping over the Lana/Jason on this re-watch. I have absolutely zero interest in a scene unless Lois, Clark, or Martha are in it.
(You may notice how I don't mention Lex at all. That's because I have stopped giving a damn about Lex. *shrug* I dunno, I got bored?)
Also, on further thought, another reason I have such difficulty believing Lana's character development is the tone of many of her scenes, the use of camera angles and directing--it's not just the writing. There's plenty of male gaze involving Lois, yes--bikinis and cleavage and short skirts. There's also plenty of female gaze involving Clark, which--THANK YOU. *g* But with Lana there's a kind of... fetishising. Compare the 4x01 shower scene and the 4x02 shower scene--I mean, firstly the 4x02 shower scene is Clark wet and naked while Lois is mostly covered up. Secondly, Lois is the one leering, teasing, and the whole thing is played for humour. Lana's shower scene, OTOH, is all ~artsy~ and male gaze. God, even when she's supposed to be sweaty from a nightmare, she's "glowing" and "perspiring". When Lois digs up six feet of dirt, she actually looks like she's dug up six feet of dirt.
I dunno, maybe I'm seeing more than there is, but that's how it comes across to me.
I prefer
