Introducing Zàobái the Kirin
Occasionally a suit project comes along that goes way beyond the scope of most projects. This suit was one of them. He took twice as long as a regular commission but in the end the effort produced one of the most unusual fursuits I've ever made. Introducing Zàobái (pronounced "Zow - Bye") the Kirin. Commissioned by nevermint As a bit of trivia Zàobái in Mandarin literally means "Black and white". Also right and wrong. Most appropriate for this character -
Kirin (or Kilin in China) are an asian variety of unicorns. Technically I dont think "unicorn" fits these guys. Many of them are illustrated with forked or even multiple horns/antlers. They are more like a cross between a dragon and a deer. They generally seem quite powerful. This made for a very interesting suit to work on. Although mostly white, this character has some muscle padding, various fur lengths, and a complicated pattern. The suit has several areas of scaled armor; this armor was created from a sturdy vinyl with each segment being sculpted individually. The whole effect is very unusual.
The head was fun. The horn was uber time consuming to work on, but I like the overall look and shape. It's detachable too, which was complicated but should make transportation much easier. The shape of the head was interesting. Asian Kirin are much like their dragons - they often have beards and long mustache-like whiskers. Their faces are somewhere between a deer and a cat. And, of course, there are scales on the head as well!!
SO....this is the project that has so consumed us for the last three weeks! As the days piled up we ended up working non-stop on this guy to try to save our schedule. We have emails to catch up on and are going to be working overtime next month. It was worth it tho.
