I started reading X-Force v.1 #97 last night, but got distracted early on, because it was mentioned that the Celestials are responsible for implanting the X-factor gene in humanity millenia ago. I'd never heard this! I sort of can't believe I haven't run across this before, so I'm wondering if I missed it? But I really can't imagine I'd overlook something that is this interesting to me.
So I abandoned the comic I was reading in favor of internet research. And I can find this referenced in
numerous places, but I can't find any mention of what comic(s) introduced this. The best I can find is that the Earth X universe elaborated on it, but this is considered out of continuity, so.
Anyway, if anyone could help me with finding actual issue numbers and stuff, I would really appreciate it. I've long been interested in the shift from "mutants: children of the atom" to "well, but there were also pre-nuclear mutants like Apocalypse and Sinister, too," and this would definitely help explain that.
Through reading through the links I've found on this, I've become really interested in people's theories on mutants vs. other superhumans as it relates to this. Because while I always thought that what set mutants apart was the "activated" X-factor gene, a lot of people are saying that other superhumans also have an activated X-factor gene, just those were activated by outside forces rather than the mutants having an X-factor gene that somehow activated itself. Which is silly, but really no sillier than most other comic book science (my favorite thing in the whole world at the moment may be Marvel's uses of the term "kinetic energy"). I would like to see actual textual references here.
Any help you can give would be much appreciated! Even if you just have a general idea of where I might look. I'm thinking this sounds like something out of one of the Eternals series, but I've never read any of those, so would appreciate input.
