I can be, but you won't want to leave quickly when we get there.He didn't voice his thoughts out loud, not wanting to show his hand right away or hint at it enough that Byakuya might figure it out. Frankly, he's rather pleasantly surprised himself that Byakuya is here even thinking he has a pleasant surprise for him as is actually the case; the conversation over the network had threatened to follow the course of their previous hot chocolate conversation, which had ended unpleasantly with hurt feelings for him ( ... )

A second time, Kaien's thoughts went unspoken as he chose to ignore Byakuya's question. He knew this wasn't the most ideal of situations and being up this early with no idea as to what he was actually doing could be irritating, but he didn't want to ruin the surprise and let Byakuya know what was coming. The lieutenant wanted to see the look on the man's face when they got there, wanted to see him happy. It was a long-shot of course, but Kaien wondered sometimes, what it would be like to see the noble smile, even just once.

'You would do well to remember your place, Shiba.'Byakuya was always saying that to him, in one form or another. Kaien wasn't sure if it really was so much about respect for him so much as trying to intimidate him from trying to keep being friendly. Either way, though, he wondered when it would occur to Byakuya that he was neither a captain nor a noble, here. Nobody would treat him the way he was used to in Soul Society. He didn't expect an answer to his question. He knew full well how persistent Shiba would be when it came to friends, heart and everything else that he took to mean more than they really did. It was a question that abolished hope, a question that left no real room for argument. It had gotten his point across nonetheless. Whether Shiba had actually paid attention to it had yet to be seen. Perhaps Jii-sama had found use in Shiba and Shihouin, but so far, neither family had proved to be anything more than trouble ( ... )
