He didn't expect an answer to his question. He knew full well how persistent Shiba would be when it came to friends, heart and everything else that he took to mean more than they really did. It was a question that abolished hope, a question that left no real room for argument. It had gotten his point across nonetheless. Whether Shiba had actually paid attention to it had yet to be seen. Perhaps Jii-sama had found use in Shiba and Shihouin, but so far, neither family had proved to be anything more than trouble.
`
Byakuya narrowed his eyes at Shiba's command. To him it might have been a suggestion, but to someone like Byakuya Kuchiki, it was an order that did not need to be followed. Regardless of the lack of knowledge these people had about him, he was still Captain Kuchiki and still the head of a noble house. Shiba knew that. It didn't matter if they did, he would assert the authority he needed to when it regarded himself. That meant Kaien Shiba was a Lieutenant, lower in ranking and therefore owed him the respect. It could be excused (after a swift reprimand) for those who didn't know, but Shiba had no excuse. "Perhaps you should have arranged our meeting place closer to our destination if time was a factor," he replied stiffly.

He still wasn't sure if he really wanted to deal with this surprise that would be made clear as soon as they arrived. He couldn't understand what was so exciting about it. No one liked surprises. Surprises were never as grand as they were made out to be, were usually humiliating for the one receiving it and... if it was something good, he'd owe Shiba more than he already did. He couldn't deny all that the previously dead shinigami had done for him, even if his pride disliked it greatly. He did not deal with debts, even if he'd never admit to owing one.

The captain wasn't given the chance to protest at Shiba's abrupt intrusion this time, following quickly into shunpo lest he be dragged, much more undignified than running. How many liberties did Kaien intend to take with him? It was one thing to touch him without permission. It was a complete other to actually launch into shunpo still dragging him. "I will warn you one last time, Shiba. Don't take such liberties with my person."

Yes, the point of surprise was to be... well, surprised, he supposed, but that didn't mean he wanted to be. It wouldn't be as easy to prepare himself without a hint. "I've heard your answer and I am unimpressed. There is nothing that must be seen before the rise of the sun that cannot be done after it has set."
