He didn't voice his thoughts out loud, not wanting to show his hand right away or hint at it enough that Byakuya might figure it out. Frankly, he's rather pleasantly surprised himself that Byakuya is here even thinking he has a pleasant surprise for him as is actually the case; the conversation over the network had threatened to follow the course of their previous hot chocolate conversation, which had ended unpleasantly with hurt feelings for him.
If it had started to head that way, he had been planning to lie about what he'd been planning to get Byakuya to show up, to tell him that he had found a possible job for him. With his rent coming up in three days, it wouldn't have been too farfetched, and certainly not coming from him.
Kaien understood full well that Byakuya didn't like him and had no intentions of changing that opinion; anyone with a pair of eyes and ears and the tiniest ounce of common sense could see that. Back in the Soul Society, they had never been all too close. And as it seemed, he had died without them ever having become close.
The lieutenant tended to consider anyone a friend that didn't do anything to directly cause harm to him or those he was close to, but here in Anatole, he had been working especially hard to make Byakuya consider him a friend. Because here, well...he was all the captain had, whether he would admit it or not, and without him...well. Nobody deserved to be alone.
Byakuya wasn't making it easy for him, of course, and less persistent individuals would have given up long ago. It was hard to stop Kaien when he had his mind set on something though, and he was confident he could get Byakuya to warm up to him, eventually. Until then, he would continue to proceed with little gestures. Lunch on him, small gifts that would mean something to the man who had everything, back in his world. And pleasant surprises, like the one he had in store now.
The captain appeared only a few minutes after he himself had arrived, and when he spotted that distinctive outfit in the mostly-empty town square, raised his arm in a wave.
"Morning, Byakuya. Did you sleep well?"
He knew, of course, that the other shinigami was in no mood for small talk, from his all-business greeting, but it was practically a reflex for him, and before the other could even answer (would he anyway?), he gave Byakuya a light tug on the arm and began running (just a normal run, no shunpo) ahead. He let go of Byakuya's arm quickly enough to avoid getting shoved away, though he knew he'd probably get berated on the matter anyway.
It was no matter. Irritating him would only serve to lower the man's expectations, and low expectations would mean he'd have plenty of room to be pleased.
"C'mon, it's this way," he urged gently, the characteristic grin on his face as he rushed ahead.
