Well... if you're looking for suggestions, I always liked the old version of the Little Mermaid. It's sad, but it's so beautiful. I think if I'd been read that one as a kid it would have been my favorite.

I'd suggest anything mythological or a fable or two. Aesop's Fables might interest them, depending on the age group.
