Having the day off, I spent the middle of it with my mom. It was fun. We had lunch and went to look at antiques. And talked about a wide range of things. (Which is what moms are for, once you're grown up.) One thing we discovered on a shelf full of doodads was a pair of brass sleigh bells, each about the size of a golf ball. But not just plain brass, they were etched with flowers and colored, and had an odd, bright sound to them. Mom insisted on buying one of them for me. It was only $5. For herself, Mom found an unusual sort of tulip-shaped vase and a wooden windowbox that looked like a picket fence.
The thing about going to look at antiques is that eventually you get a feeling for what's unusual and interesting. She and I have seen enough that we can spot the things that people don't normally collect, or don't often sell. Like a set of glass goblets that didn't just have thistles on them, they were shaped like thistle flowers. Even if I don't buy things, I love those moments of "hey, cool!"
I also bought some fine red fleece to line my coat pockets with. It was 50% off. I got more than enough, which leaves me wondering what else I can do with it. It's too pretty not to use! I was wondering if anybody makes quilts out of fleece. (Honestly, it feels more like flannel than fleece.)
Have just discovered that ketchup can be used to clean brass. (Not that I used it on the sleigh bell. Salt and lemon juice worked just fine.)
