My textbook for my latest grad class is rather badly written. It reminds me of the assignments I did last semester where I fluffed up the length with lots of nothing. You know, expanding sentences with needless explanations, that sort of thing. And while I suppose I shouldn't expect Shakespeare from a textbook author, one would think that librarian would have a better command of language. Because "collocate" only needs to be "group" or "associate with", and the singular and plural of an organizational structure ought to be "scheme" and "schema", not "schema" and "schemas". Yes, I know that lately folks have started using "schema" as a singular, but it doesn't make it right.
Which makes it even more bizarre when the author starts talking about authority control, which is all about standardizing terms used to describe books, subjects, authors, etc. If we're going to impose a standard on everybody, why shouldn't we seek to use language that's as effective as possible, and use it correctly? Seems to me you could solve a lot of problems with authority control if you just learned better English.

In other news, I seem to have lost some weight. ::does a happy dance:: I wasn't sure until I tried on this pair of slacks I've had for several years, black slacks that have been tight lately, and I put them on without control-top nylons, and they were loose. ::continues happy dance:: I sure hope I can keep this up. My goal is to go down one dress size. Which would be fabulous. And, y'know, eating smaller meals - even if they have more fruit in them - is saving me a load of money. Which all ends up in my gas tank instead, but it's still a nice plus.
yay,
