Since my last update on my attempt to take on the 50 Book Challenge, I have read Bored of the Rings, Mostly Harmless, by Douglas Adams, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant. I was a bit disappointed by Bored of the Rings, which wasn't nearly as funny as I expected (although the Tim Benzedrene character did make me snicker). Mostly Harmless was only slightly funny, but I'm not sure Douglas Adams intended for it to be funny. It's the end of the Hitchhiker series, and actually sad and alarming. It was a nice change from the later books in the series, which were, frankly, silly and not that funny. The Red Tent was absolutely enchanting. It's the story of Dinah, the only daughter of the Biblical Jacob. She only has the briefest mention in the Bible, with her rape inspiring her brothers to murder an entire city. It also gives an interesting, if not entirely accurate, view of women in Biblical times. Well, I have no idea if it was accurate or not, as I did not study Biblical society. Anyway, so that brings up the tally to 23 books so far. I have no expectation of reaching fifty books, but I never did. My goal was actually 25, which, it being August, I more than expect to succeed. Yay me!
