In among but not of?

I'm reading my e-mail as I sit here in a Starbucks in the middle of nowhere (or, more precisely, Redmond). Two distinct sets of friends are arguing about two distinct Geek subjects: one about the viability of the SciFi Channel and why it hasn't broken out, and the other about the French and Scandanavian protests over iTunes' and iPods' ( Read more... )

RE: The Sci-Fi Channel; IMHO it has broken out. When they are running episodes of BSG on NBC during the summer, that's a breakout.

I rebut with the fact that SciFi has decided to run Pro Wrestling as a way to "satisfy its viewers." No successful channel would be doing a) something so out of its own genre or b) so out and out cheesy.

But, honestly, it's not a debate I want to have. I just despair at the whole concept of pro wresting on SciFi. I'm watching for fiery hail and a rain of frogs, I am.

somewhere, hordes of pro wrestling fans are holding up umbrellas against a similar rain of frogs...

(I bowed out of that entire argument two screen in, myself. Life's too short to hear people argue when they've already decided the other side(s) are Wrong)

Wrestling? Really?

This brings up a whole other point about networks coming in with one kind of programming, then "morphing" into one-size-fits-all generics such as OLN, TNT, Spike, USA, FX, etc. Too bad really.

The Sci-Fi channel will never break out until it quits making horror/suspense/SF movies that make Hell Comes to Frogtown look like Citizen Kane.

That's the general consensus, and yet those movies are SciFi's highest rated programming, astonishingly enough, so I suspect they're not going anywhere any time soon.

Which actually makes me wonder if pro wrestling is really that stupid of a move after all...
