In among but not of?

I'm reading my e-mail as I sit here in a Starbucks in the middle of nowhere (or, more precisely, Redmond). Two distinct sets of friends are arguing about two distinct Geek subjects: one about the viability of the SciFi Channel and why it hasn't broken out, and the other about the French and Scandanavian protests over iTunes' and iPods' ( Read more... )

RE: The Sci-Fi Channel; IMHO it has broken out. When they are running episodes of BSG on NBC during the summer, that's a breakout.

IMHO...

I rebut with the fact that SciFi has decided to run Pro Wrestling as a way to "satisfy its viewers." No successful channel would be doing a) something so out of its own genre or b) so out and out cheesy.

But, honestly, it's not a debate I want to have. I just despair at the whole concept of pro wresting on SciFi. I'm watching for fiery hail and a rain of frogs, I am.

somewhere, hordes of pro wrestling fans are holding up umbrellas against a similar rain of frogs...

(I bowed out of that entire argument two screen in, myself. Life's too short to hear people argue when they've already decided the other side(s) are Wrong)

Wrestling? Really?

This brings up a whole other point about networks coming in with one kind of programming, then "morphing" into one-size-fits-all generics such as OLN, TNT, Spike, USA, FX, etc. Too bad really.

Yep, wrestling. The thing is, even with BSG the success that it is, that success is all about buzz but it's not translating into the kick-ass ratings that would make SciFi compete with networks like A&E or Bravo.

I think we all had high hopes for what SciFi could do for the genre. It's a shame that, so far anyway, it hasn't been able to meet those hopes.

Yeah, I saw that and I still can't believe it. I keep hoping a Vogon will come into the ring opening night, read some poetry, and then rip someone's head off.

Jeez, they could at least run Mexican wrestling.....

Who was the armpit-huffer who determined that SciFi's viewers would be satisfied by pro wrestling in the first place? I mean, really, unless they stage Klingon Smackdowns or Balrog vs. Godzilla matches or some other silly-ass thing. It's like the Oxygen Network deciding that everyone who tunes in for "Mad About You" will just looove the Monster Truck tournaments.
