IMO, not enough people desire to understand the infinite. Instead, they want the infinite to be whatever they believe it is.

An old but interesting essay on Oracles and Divination (Both Ancient and Modern)

I think his definition of Divination is a little broad. To me, fiction is an attempt to seek knowledge and understanding by an irrational means -- which would fit his definition. Come to think of it, maybe stories are oracles ;)
