So yesterday my coworker and I were taking a walk next door for a coffee during our break when we noticed something very strange... at 10:30 am... the Ikea parking lot was completely empty. Hmmm. And then we noticed police driving around... also weird. But we figured it was still early maybe they were doing some sort of check or something... like safety drill.
Get back to the office and find out that there are now barracades set up at the road... to block all traffic and police are stopping everyone trying to get through. And then we find out that there was a bomb threat.
Now... to show you the proximity of me to the building... go here:
http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/2009/3/12/120309_ikea_bommelding.html I know it's in Dutch!!! But in the 2nd video at the beginning there is a picture of Ikea... and at the top left hand corner of Ikea. (and then down a floor to the part that's sticking out).. that is my window at work. Yup. I got to watch the whole thing unfold.
Not only did they apparently plant bombs there but also at the train station Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA... which is where I take a train to every morning for work. And... everything is being linked to the same people who put bombs in Madrid..
I wasn't really scared yesterday, more like confused... but now I'm a little scared. I mean... I don't think there is a bomb in there because I think they would have found it by now (although.... there are so so so so so many hiding places in Ikea... and this is a HUGE one)... or they would have blown it up by now. I'm a little scared... because it was so close.
I know that I live in a world where there is terrorism... but I honestly never expected it to hit so close to home. I'm just glad no one was hurt yesterday and that people should be able to buy reasonably priced furniture again by Saturday
