Starry Night

Yesterday  I woke up extra early and took the train into Amsterdam to the van Gogh museum to see the exhibition van Gogh and the Colours of the Night. I have know about the exhibition ever since our honeymoon in New York...

A little bit of history here:

I have been dying to see van Gogh's Starry Night since I bought a poster (photomosiac) in my first year of University... I thought it was the most beautiful picture... and I couldn't wait to see it in person. Only drawback... located in New York... at the MoMA (on permanent display there). 10 years after I bought the poster I go to New York to see Starry Night... Raph and I get there... buy our tickets only to find a sign that said "this painting is travelling"

I can't tell you how devestated I was... but the sign also said that it would be in Amsterdam starting in February. So... I didn't get to see it in New York, but I would have my chance (Thank God I live in Holland).

Yesterday:

I saw it. It was amazing... beyond amazing... I was weak in the knees. I have never seen something so fantastic. Any photo or interpretation doesn't do it any justice whatsoever. I was so unbelievably moved... I was nearly in tears seeing it's beauty.

There is no way that you can ever look at a work from Van Gogh and appreciate it for what it is without seeing it in person.

Not only are his colours amazing... but the texture... and this is something that can never be caught my photo... you need to see it in person. He uses brush strokes that are above the canvas... each piece of art has depth and texture which is something that can never be seen unless looking at the original.

I cannot get over how fantastic this painting is... and how moved I was to see it. It was totally worth the wait. In fact, it's still here until June, I might just go to see it again... that is how much I loved it. I can't get over that I saw my favourite painting in person... I saw Starry Night right in front of me... how lucky am I?
