I had almost forgotten I was capable of making posts that weren't Little Mermaid translations! Silly me. It's still fandom-y crap, though, but that's only because nothing important is going on in my real life right now, other than memorizing Italian vocabulary and going to Judah's art show thing.
So yeah, I decided I was going to write this a long time ago but it took until now to actually do it. Remember when Oruha showed up in Tsubasa RC? And how rad it was? And don't you wish other Clover characters had showed up too?
Well, wish no more!
The inside of this shop is different from everywhere else Sakura has seen in Infinity. The lines are stark and the walls are white, but there is a warm cast to the lighting, and above the shelves a landscape painting of moutains on a clear day streches all the way around the room.
At the cash register sits a thin boy maybe her own age with beautiful long eyelashes. He is absorbed in whatever is coming through his headphones, and his eyes look very far away, as if he is dreaming.
"Pardon me," says Sakura. "What are you listening to?"
The boy looks up, startled. "Oh. Huh?"
"What are you listening to?"
"Oh. Sorry." The boy smiles sheepishly. "Um, give me a second and I'll..." He turns to a panel behind the counter and starts fiddling with the controls. Almost immediately music fills the shop in surround sound.
/A bird in a gilded cage,
A bird bereft of flight,
A bird that cannot cry,
A bird all by itself/
This music, too, is different from what she has heard here. There is no thumping bass or synthesizer. Only a piano and a woman's voice, clear and haunting.
/So take me
To a true Elsewhere/
Sakura stands in place for the entire song. When the last chords have faded, she turns to the boy to see that his eyes are closed. "Whose song is it?" she asks softly.
"I've never been able to find out. ...Sometimes I think it must be mine." The boy opens his eyes with a funny little smile. Then he looks shocked. "You, you're crying."
She puts her hand to her face. There are tears. "Oh. I am." Funny that she wouldn't even notice. She takes a handkerchief from her purse and presses it to her eyes until they are dry. "I'm sorry."
"No, don't be."
The second of the two doors clicks open. It's a silver-haired man in sunglasses and a charcoal coloured suit. When the boy at the counter sees him, his face lights up with a fragility which he immediately attempts to hide. "Ah, Gingetsu-san, it's good to see you..."
"Ran." The voice is curt but the affection in it is, at least to her, unmistakable.
Sakura tucks her handkerchief away again as they talk about trivial things. She is angry at herself for feeling betrayed. For a moment she had thought 'you are like me,' she had thought they were both misfits in this city. But what Ran longs for is already within his arm's reach.
She smiles at him as she leaves. She can't begrudge others their happiness.
