Interesting piece on the New York Magazine website about Michael Bloomberg being courted for a VP position - by both McCain and Obama.

If you're reading this, you're already aware that I would love to see an Obama/Bloomberg ticket. It would seriously help Obama's economic credentials and would speak well to his stated desire to abandon partisanship. It would speak to a certain level of daring, as Bloomberg is a guy who owes nothing to no one and who knows it. (Which is exactly what I like about him as a candidate.).

Where Bloomberg can't help Obama is the white working-class vote. Are working-class West Virginians going to respond to a ticket comprised of a mixed race guy who's comparatively young (and who they've been lead to believe is a closet Muslim and an elitist) and a billionaire Jew with a big mouth? Possibly not. But taking on Bloomberg could damage McCain among those types of voters in exactly the same way.

Personally I think Bloomberg would be enough of a boon to McCain to really make me worry for an Obama ticket, especially if Hillary's more rabid fans insist (as my Aunt does) on voting Republican out of spite no matter how much McCain is the opposite of what they want for this country and how much Obama's policies are similar to Hillary's just because they're pissed that someone had the audacity to take away that to which she was apparently entitled.

And I really, really don't want President McCain. So Barack? Please steal Bloomberg away. I beg you. John Edwards doesn't want to be VP anyway; he wants to be Attorney General (which would also be awesome). Prove that you're serious about an unconventional approach. Alleviate some of your media problems by bringing in a guy who's never been afraid of a verbal sucker punch so that you can maintain your "not going to fight dirty" image while having someone who will bulldog a bit for you - because as much as I hate the petty attack part of politics, it's a reality with which you're going to have to deal.

Oh, and by the way? Why is it OK for McCain to actively seek the endorsement of a nut who thinks Katrina was God's punishment and that Hitler was sent by God to force Jews into the Promised Land and then go "Oh, no! He said what? My bad!" but Obama is still catching shit because his preacher has gone insane? Oh, right. Because the type of Republicans who are keeping the Rev. Wright conversation alive are the type of people who agree with Hagee's bigoted bullshit.

Anyway. Obama/Bloomberg '08, dammit. MAKE IT HAPPEN.
