Our dear friend M. went with Ulysses to pick up the credenza on Friday afternoon. Even though I had been worried in the shop that it was too small, it’s the perfect size for our living room. We got it in and started pulling off the backing. I’d thought that we’d have to take the backing off, remove a couple of internal shelves, put a lot of computer stuff inside, drill a hole in the backing for wiring, get it all back on, and voila!
Instead, it became quickly obvious that we could just leave the backing off entirely. (We’ll store the backing and internal shelves in case we want to sell this piece in the future.)
It works amazingly well. Our living room seems enormous now. The space previously taken up by the television only extended maybe a further six inches into the room, but it was such heavy, blocked space that it seemed a major obstacle to navigate.
All of the wiring is inside the credenza, as well as the (ugly) computer box. All (or almost all) of our cds have been downloaded onto the computer, so we play music now by opening the drawer and clicking on a cd. DVDs are played through the computer too. My son bought a computer game, and he drags up a dining chair, pulls the monitor and keyboard out of the drawers, and plays until I fear his brain will turn to mush.
Of course I took a photograph to share with you. I also took a picture of the wind-up lion sitting on top (although I had to move the bugger to better light). This is the scary lion of my childhood. My grandfather helped me to work up an infant fear of wind-up toys by running this crazy thing at me. I love it now: it’s terrifying!
The long-awaited latest member of my furniture family and terrifying lion:
