I have a cold. Around six o’clock last night, I thought I might have some seasonal allergies, or maybe allergies related to dust, but after a fitful nap from seven to ten, followed by hours of lying in bed begging sleep to show up and take me away, it became clear that I had a full-out cold.
Fortunately, I spent most of yesterday cleaning up. (There’s nothing worse than being housebound in a sty.) Sometimes I let things get out of hand around here and then I’m all miserable and depressed.
What I find very difficult to get over is the apartment in a state of flux. Something is changing, but all of the pieces aren’t quite in place, plus regular mess, equals a frantic, worried, slightly insane me. I want to ‘fix’ whatever it is, but even when I put in the effort, nothing gets fixed. It’s totally crazy-making.
One of my big goals this summer is to get the apartment in a complete state of all-finished. Ulysses and I are both going to be working at home a great deal and, given the mobility of the laptop, I don’t know quite where I’ll be working. I suspect that I’ll be in the living/dining room. That would be fine, but I need it to be both functional and pretty.
I think it’s getting there. Here are a few pictures of this area as it appears today. (Forgive the blurry - I’m simply a terrible photographer and I’ve got the fever shakes.)
Here’s the seating area.
And here’s the dining area and bookshelves. We’ve recently moved some stuff, so there’s actually extra space for more books. Exciting!
Here’s a cute little elf planter.
And here’s. . . as Mia said when she was three, “what is this fuck?”
I’ll tell you what that is: that’s the replacement solution to the television, plus the solution to the upstairs office situation, plus a desk that really needs to go back where it belongs, plus a number of CDs getting burned onto the computer. And on and on. This is the kind of thing that makes me insane. The intention is that all of the computer-y stuff will go into a vintage credenza except for the monitor and speakers. We’ll listen to music and watch DVDs through the computer. It will be relatively inconspicuous, unlike the hideously large television we used to have. I’ve been looking for said credenza for months. In an act of pure faith, I sold the television and brought all of this stuff downstairs. But . . . no credenza. If I didn’t have Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder - self-diagnosed via on-line quiz - I could probably wait throughout the summer for the perfect garage sale find. As it is, I cannot live with this any longer and made Ulysses go out yesterday and purchase the walnut one from Papa Lou’s. Overpriced and all.
Sigh.
But pictures to follow when I finally get it in place.
