Well the folks who gave me a Chris/Vin oriented thumbs up on this episode weren't kidding at all, were they? Because OMG it is so clear to me that Vin went back to *Chris* specifically. I am so glad you posted this tonight - I have to leave in the am and won't be back until Sunday and I wanted to make sure that you were okay with this eo - yes this is the *best* C/V ep - and glad you caught that Chris gets Vin up off the ground after he tumbles down adn *Charlotte* 0- who ran to her husband when was shot *doesn't even move*! Oh, see, I didn't even really quite see it as a poor Vin moment because Chris had already put Vin in a position of choosing between them with his "I need to know I can depend on you." I think he rode back, looked at Charlotte and chose Chris.

I may have to beg you for a few Chris icons from this one.

Yeah, there are some *extremely* iconnable moments in this episode. :D (Pity it's so dusty and brushy when Chris is holding Vin. :D)

It's not until it all washes out that eh himself understands that he doesn't want Mary, he does want Vin, and he wants Vin *in every way*. This is the apex to me of the C/V/ relationship, right here.

Yeah, this is a very very C/V episode and oh so very yummy!!

Ahhhh! Wasn't this a wonderful ending for what looked like Vin leaving with Charlotte? Amazing how it could still be so slashy. Another example of the writers throwing women at the men making them look even more gay. *g*

Loved Vin needing to go back and warn Chris the others. And the first thing Chris says to him, "You back for good?" You're right, Chris totally didn't sound sincere when he said it was Vin's life, none of his business. And he was jealous and hurt when he said that it looked to him like Vin was already gone. Loved Buck and Ezra doing the slingshot. Reminded me of the ep where they couldn't get the fuse lit, and then when Buck threw the dynamite the fuse fell out. *g*

I can just imagine Buck and Ezra playing together as children. I think they would get into a world of trouble!

I also like how Nathan and Ezra's relationship has progressed, although I think Ezra got over his prejudice awfully fast. Nathan took longer to accept Ezra for who he is, which is more realistic. And oh, how I love the flying into the bushes bit! "That was not kind, not kind at all" :) And Ezra getting slapped! Ouch. He reacts as if it's not the first time too! hehe I don't think even Buck has ever been shown getting slapped!

Ezra did *seem* to get over his prejudice rather fast, but I think it fits with his personality. Ezra keeps things that are useful to him and he found out about two-thirds through the pilot that his prejudice against Nathan (and by extension against black people in general) was not only not useful, but rather counter-productive. It also seems to be something he absorbed from society rather than something he was taught, as Maude doesn't seem to have any issues with either Nathan OR Nathan's dad. Unless it was taught by one of the bajillion relatives she dumped him with during his childhood. At any rate, I don't think it's out of character for him to discard it as soon as he realizes it doesn't help him in life at all ( ... )

Like maybe, for a second, he forgot it was *Ezra* - his rogueish, card-cheating, grifting but ultimately good-hearted buddy - and instead he saw the sort of southern white man who made him sword fight in the first place.

I love this interpretation, and I think it's very plausible. Look at Working Girls when Nathan was practically frothing at the mouth over Ezra "selling women off like chattel", when that's not really what Ezra was doing. Ezra's marriage brokering was going to be a win-win for everyone, I think, since he clearly DID care what happened to those women.

Just thought I'd point out to all the Spike/Angel fans that the actor who played the powder man was also in an episode of Angel. The one where still evil Spike comes to LA to steal the gem of amarra ring from Angel, and he hires the powder man, who's also a vamp, to torture Angel to find out where Angel hid the ring. The powder man is very good at playing crazy/evil!

Also, in the wide shot where the settlers are waving the white flag to surrender the deed to Dickie, if you look close enough, you can tell that they used the actors' doubles for that shot. I found it mildly amusing. :) It's like a where's waldo: find the doubles! Like in Vendetta, when Ezra is about to climb onto the steel coach, I could tell it was a double because his ring was on his pinkie, instead of his ring finger, like Anthony wears it. And how sweet is it that Tony had the costumers add a ruby to his wedding ring so he could wear it on the show?
OK, wow I am really babbling now, I will stop!

Ditto - that is interesting both about the doubles and about the ring - how cool! I'm curious as to who EC's double was . . . and MB's. . . now there would be an interesting crack fic story - the doubles getting together . . .

This episode has to be about the closest we get to C/V canon. I mean, Chris just doesn't make a single move to stop Mary from marrying someone else and Vin dumps his girl to be with Chris...can't get more slashy than that LOL!

Yeah, and their friendship is just so cool and so cute! I love how accepting of Ezra Nathan is, while still digging at him about it. "Lord, Ezra ain't you got no shame." :D

I do feel that Ezra's comments about how the gold entices him really tells a lot about why he does things. He's very aware that it's not particularly attractive nor healthy for him either.

I think you're right. He does seem to be very self aware about the two conflicting impulses in his psyche.

I think Vin knows Charlotte better than she knows herself. He can see clearly that she still has deep feelings for her husband. She's right there to tend Richmond when he needs her ( ... )

DITTO - and well said!!! They do have destiny, as you mention toward the end of your post. Love this ep - very very C/V!

There were plenty of Southerners who didn't like slavery and I think Ezra is a little less 'good ole Southern Boy' than he puts on. (I still can't slash them tho! *shudders!*)This is an excellent observation - I had noticed in "Love and Honor" that Ez and Nathan were having quite a good time ragging Buck about Inez and 'nunca' at the beginning, but you're right - they do it in a number of other eps, spending time together. I think there's a wonderful dynamic between them and I think we need to have ( ... )

Love the screen caps for this - makes me want to make icons :) The Powder Man is wonderfully insane, which makes a great bad guy. Wagon Train isn't my favourite set of eps and I don't tend to watch them too frequently, but there are some great scenes and interactions between the boys that just have to be seen in order to get fic muses :) The wonderful thing about this show is it's so beautifully shot, and these episodes in the open really bring it to focus.

And the gaff with the inconsistency - I noticed that myself last week, although had to rewind to make sure I was seeing right :) It doesn't happen too frequently at least, although I guess that kind of shot is difficult to film repeatedly.

That's pretty much my take on the eps. And OMG Chris running to Vin's side when he's hurt is just the stuff that fantasies are made of.

And I love how obvious it is that Vin chooses Chris over Charlotte. Love that!

The show is beautifully shot, and the scenery was just so beautiful! The only problem with the outdoor episodes like this one is that their hat brims make shadows on their faces that are challenging to work with.
