Okay, well, this episode I have heard something about. What I've heard makes me more than a little nervous about watching it, but farad has done her best to reassure me

I love your reviews, thanks for posting! But you didn't mention Ezra and Buck's little shoving match! That might be my favorite part of the episode. I always watch it mulitple times in a row when viewing the ep, and it still cracks me up everytime.
I've always wondered just how far away the homesteader's land is from Four Corners. And I also think it's interesting to imagine Mary and Billy making the return trip home with the 7, and having to sleep under the stars with them. I'm sure the guys would behave a bit differently with a woman and child around! Not that they're a bunch of naughty boys normally! Would that have been improper for a woman of that time to do what Mary did?
Your caps are gorgeous! I snagged me a whole bunch of them. *g*
OMG, Vin pulling the cork out with his teeth was...guh! Both times I watched the ep it made me all shivery. *g* And the blue shirt. Vin was so very pretty in this ep. (And I'll freely admit that most of the caps I took were of him. *g*)
Mary was looking quite lovely in this ep. Did you notice that when Mary said Gerard was a friend of her late husband's, Gerard called him 'Frank' instead of 'Stephen'?
I agree that Chris has never made a play for Mary, so him acting jealous in this ep and letting Gerard think there might be something more was very strange. Unless, as you say, it was his own competitive nature. You're also right about Chris' smile. Muh.
Why is Vin being so in your face at Richmond? I mean there's no especial reason why Richmond should take O'shea's offer and, if Vin were in his position, he'd probably be getting his back up too.I didn't understand that either! I mean, sure, Richmond is being quite unreasonable wrt the seven, and nasty towards

OMG Yes!! And just imagine if you will that he was talking to Chris there, and it was a tall gunslinger in a black duster just taking up the left edge of the screen that he was keeping his eyes on so intently while pulling that cork out with his teeth. ::spontaneously combusts::

Hmmm, no I missed that. And I'm a little annoyed. This show's usually better than that. (I mean how hard is it to look back at the shooting script of an old episode?) Maybe Frank was his middle name or something.
Unless, as you say, it was his own competitive nature.
I really think that was it. He didn't especially want Mary, but he doesn't want to *lose* either.
I missed it the first watching, because I actually quoted him as saying Frank, but as I was re-watching and typing up my notes I was like, why doesn't that sound right? So I went back and looked it up, 'cause I'm anal thorough like that. *g*
So Vin's maybe more vulnerable than he might otherwise have been to someone who actually wants him, someone he can *help*, etc.
Oh, I like that. Along with your comment elsewhere that he's confusing infatuation with love.
Yeah, I was wonder just what exactly Charlotte was gonna do while Vin was off being wild and woolly. Did she just expect to go with him everywhere, sit home alone while he's off doing whatever... And what was Vin gonna do? Join some other gang in Brazil?!!

Or, even if they stayed in the states and went to California or somewhere, I just don't see how they were going to find any sort of life together.
But that's what infatuation does, makes you an idiot until the hormones wear off. Then you realize "Did I seriously make promises to *that* person?" and it's all just vaguely embarrassing. ::koff:: At least in my experience. ::koff::
Just don't ever try to convince me again that you are trying to hold off on your infatuation with Vin........it is quite obvious in this display gf..... :P I love the ones of Vin and Chris laughing........they do it so little that it is delightful to see it....... I cannot wait to see Wagon Train........ Lovely coverage.....
Seriously, this episode is methinks rather nice for both the Chris/Vin and the Chris/Mary fans (though even a non-C/Ver like myself does have to say that Chris is a damn sight more tetchy about Vin mooning over Charlotte than Mary fluttering around Gerald...)
Well, I didn't manage to resist the Vin-Pretty at all today, because I'm only human and he was just *so* gorgeous!

Yeah, he didn't seem at all pleased about Vin mooning over Charlotte. :D
But yeah, I'm not having any real issue with this episode, at least not so far, even as a hard-core C/V-er. Which is kind of interesting.
This double episode's uncomplicated fun (in the midst of what is becoming very very complicated fun before and after) - I love the Buck&Ezra stuff (the bet, the business with the letter to Maude, the shoving match), I absolutely adore The Powder Man and I do agree that Our Heroes - especially Vin - look pretty damn fine splendid (like they don't... when?)
I do think the writers were trying for a little Chris/Mary subtext here, but it's too little too late.

This is a surprisingly fun episode so far, though seriously I wish this were Vin with Chris. But so far I'm not seeing anything they can't recover from. :D
The Powder Man is creepy but *so* awesome with his Camptown Races. This is a man who obviously *loves* his work!
And yeah, they look *gorgeous*!!

Too little too late and much as I adore both of the actors and the characters they have all the chemistry of a bowl of tapioca together.
they have all the chemistry of a bowl of tapioca together. Niiiiccce:) and extremely true (if people want het, he had way more chemistry with Lydia) though you're more polite than what I once said about Stargate's O'Neill & Carter...
Just have to speak up on this - I didn't think of Chris being jealous of Mary in this episode. If anything it seemed to me that he was very very accepting of her relationship with Gerald/Gerard (whatever his name was?) I have to admit I was pulling for her to stay with the guy the first time I saw this one

I agree with you completely that I can't really quite *see* that Chris is jealous of Mary with Gerrard, but I do, sincerely, think we're supposed to. With Chris's little "I ain't blind" line and the, umm, looks he's giving Mary and Gerrard and the kids. Though I kind of got the feeling he was more longing for the children in a way than for Mary.
In a way the script is at war with the acting. I really do think Chris is supposed to be jealous. I just think it doesn't *show* at all because in the *acting* he's not.
I kind of liked Charlotte and Vin - I know that is not the popular view but I felt sorry for her. Will was a jerk - treated her horribly. I know that the loss of a child can put a terrible strain on relationships but
( ... )
They definitely should have asked me to write it! Mwa ha ha ha! Though I am pretty sure what I would have written would have never made it passed the network censors!
You know I never considered that we don't see Ezra in a successful con do we? I'll have to think about that one, but I agree he was a lot better at handling children than that. Buck was never shown to be successful with kids either - thinking of Safecracker - except for the time Chris thought of Buck and Adam. I'd still have bet the farm he'd could have handled that little troll better than he did, it just served the writer's purpose to make both of them blow it without regard to being true to the characters. That is one of my chief grips with some of the episodes, they gave us these wonderful characters and then were inconsistent with the writing at times. Maybe it is just me.
Though I am pretty sure what I would have written would have never made it passed the network censors!
Surely that's half the fun though. Seeing what you can slip by them. :D

I'm not 100% sure I'm right, but I can't think of one off the top of my head. Kind of changes my perspective on Maude's lesson in Sins of the Past though. From her perspective maybe he really *did* need it.

Well that's certainly *not* a problem that's unique to this show. And really, I find that this show is better than a lot of others for *not* doing this too much. Sometimes in The Sentinel the only answer to "why did someone do this" is "crappy writing" because there's no way to come up with an even vaguely plausible answer.
