Part 2

That night the nightmares were worse than ever before. They were more intensive, more vivid, and realer. And even if they did say you cannot feel pain in your dream, Tatsuya was completely sure he was hurting for real, just like when the nightmares really happened. And then there was the coldness… loneliness… and they were slowly killing Tatsuya.

“Tatsuya! Wake up!”

Suddenly Tatsuya was sitting on his and Ryo’s bed panting hard, the pain a faint memory on his skin but the fear and panic still pumping through his veins.

“It’s ok, Tat-chan,”

Tatsuya didn’t get scared of the sudden touch on his shoulder when Ryo pulled Tatsuya against his chest. Tatsuya had already recognized the voice in his sleep and only calmed down more when Ryo kissed Tatsuya’s sweaty forehead and offered the warmth and security Tatsuya needed the most at that very moment.

Tatsuya closed his eyes in relieve but quickly reopened them when the scenes from his nightmares flashed behind the closed eyelids. He clung onto Ryo keeping his eyes wide open instead.

It wasn’t often that Ryo woke up when Tatsuya was having a nightmare. Tatsuya had learned to wake up quietly even from a nightmare in fear of a new punishment. Ryo did know that Tatsuya was having nightmares and that he saw them relatively often. Still, Ryo hadn’t asked too much about the subject. He knew it was still painful for Tatsuya.

“Are you alright?” Ryo asked in a quiet voice having listened to Tatsuya’s calming breathing for a few minutes while holding him without a word.

“Yeah,” Tatsuya answered on slightly shaky tone.

“We’ve never really talked about those things you had to go through when… you were taken. I know it’s nothing pretty but if you feel like talking, I will listen to you,” Ryo told Tatsuya and placed a kiss on Tatsuya’s hair.

“Isn’t it funny how talking about something usually makes people feel better?” Tatsuya threw a question that took Ryo by surprise. He had been expecting something else than what could have been taken as a philosophical question.

“I guess it is,” Ryo answered even though he wasn’t sure if Tatsuya was expecting him to do so.

“Coldness. That was the worst,” Tatsuya spoke and this time his voice was barely audible. “The room they kept me was… barely warm enough to survive without feeling too cold. But… sometimes they would throw ice cold water on me and leave me freeze through the whole night. Those nights were so cold… and lonely…” Tatsuya’s pain-filled voice faded away and Ryo could feel how Tatsuya was shivering like he would have felt the coldness for real.

Ryo decided it was better not to say anything and just let Tatsuya tell what he wanted in the speed he felt comfortable with. He was also determined not to let his feelings show so that Tatsuya wouldn’t get them wrong and stop talking in fear he was making Ryo disgusted of him. Which Ryo knew would never happen but Tatsuya could think so.

“They were afraid of touching me so there was never any kind of body contact which was torture on its own way already,” Tatsuya continued. Ryo was well aware how important it had been to Tatsuya to be able to be close to people. He had always been the type who likes hugging and skin contact a lot while his ability drove people away from him, making them refuse to touch Tatsuya.

“They would beat me with different objects if I didn’t do exactly what they wanted me to do. It made me feel like a monster animal that would kill them if they got too close,” Tatsuya sniffled against Ryo’s chest.

“I used to ask for you all the time and soon they learnt that if they threatened to kill you I would do anything they told me to,” Tatsuya told and Ryo felt somehow slightly good that he had been that important to Tatsuya all this time.

“But... sometimes they would give me hope that in the end, if I kept doing what they told me to, they would let me see you again,” Tatsuya continued. “And I was stupid enough to believe it for years although I do believe it saved me from a lot of physical punishments,” Tatsuya finished the sentence shoulders shaking from the silent sobbing.

The good feeling pretty much disappeared the moment Ryo heard that the bastards had used him as one way to torture Tatsuya. Giving false hope was something that could destroy a person completely after they realized the hope they believed in was never there.

Tatsuya felt like Ryo tried to pull him even closer to his chest even though there was no longer any free space in between them. But that was exactly what Tatsuya needed to feel slightly better, acceptance and no disgust.

“It’s indeed funny how talking can make you feel better even when the other isn’t saying anything,” Tatsuya had a small smile on his lips when he spoke. “You don’t know what to say?” Tatsuya added a question with a quiet whisper.

“I believe there aren’t any words that could form a sentence including the message I want it to,” Ryo answered finally pushing Tatsuya slightly away from his chest. Tatsuya kept his head low but Ryo made him lift it up and face Ryo.

The look in Ryo’s eyes told more than any words could even tell. Tatsuya wasn’t even sure how Ryo could include everything in his eyes like that. The compassion, love, sympathy and promise of never letting go. Tatsuya was sure there was anger and hatred towards the people who had done all of that to Tatsuya but they had emptied their memories and so there was no reason to look them up for revenge any longer.

“You don’t know how grateful I am that fate gave me a chance to find you again,” Tatsuya gave a small smile and leaned forward to hug Ryo who wrapped his arms around Tatsuya right away to return the embrace.

“I feel the same way,” Ryo kissed Tatsuya’s hair. “Every single day,” he added.

There wasn’t a need to say anything else and Tatsuya closed his eyes to concentrate on his lover and the heat radiating from him. He couldn’t believe how much better he felt just after getting all the secrets out. The torture details had been pretty much the only secret between the couple and it had been understandable.  Even though the torture hadn’t included physical torture that much, it was actually the psychological torture that was more painful: false hope, locking in the dark wet and cold… those destroyed pretty much anyone. Hitting with different objects and whipping was nothing compared to that.

Tatsuya knew he couldn’t go to get any professional help. There were too many things that he wouldn’t be able to tell them out loud which is why Tatsuya really hoped he would be strong enough to get through the trauma on his own. With Ryo helping him the best he could, of course.

“Tatsuya,” Ryo started to talk again after a moment of silence. “I’ve been thinking that we should go down to Fukuoka some weekend,” Ryo said.

What Ryo said took Tatsuya by surprise. He pulled back from Ryo and looked at the younger one with big innocent eyes like he wouldn’t have understood the reason why Ryo was saying something like that.

“I know you miss your family and want to know how they are doing,” Ryo told. Tatsuya hadn’t exactly said it out loud but there were times when Ryo could just see things from Tatsuya. This was definitely one of those times.

“They don’t remember anything about me. I ca- I can’t just appear there. I’m a stranger,” Tatsuya started to panic slightly when thinking about having to talk to his parents without them having any signs of recognizing him, their own son.

“We don’t have to meet them. We can just go there and see that they are well and return. I know it would mean a lot for you to actually see them and be sure they are doing well,” Ryo promised. “Plus it could work as a vacation where it would be just about me and you and shopping and eating delicious Fukuoka foods and relaxing,” Ryo added with a soft smile.

For a moment Tatsuya couldn’t completely comprehend what was going on but after it hit him, Tatsuya was suddenly chuckling and smiling.

“I can’t believe you’re doing it again,” Tatsuya shook his head slightly from side to side.

“Doing what?” Ryo asked confused.

“Making me forget everything negative and concentrate on something that is important to me,” Tatsuya answered looking Ryo straight in the eyes with a smile still plastered on his face.

“It’s not something I do consciously,” Ryo admitted and brought a hand on Tatsuya’s face gently caressing the older one’s cheek with his thumb. “But I do know I just want to see this smile on your face every single day,” Ryo continued.

“You-“ Tatsuya started to try to say something but the alarm clock went off to sign that it was time for them to get up and get ready for the new day. Ryo having to go to the office and Tatsuya having to get ready for the private teacher to come by.

~.~.~

Tatsuya had been having a good day. Ryo had had a sudden day off and so Tatsuya had called his private teacher to cancel that day’s teaching. When the call had ended Tatsuya had decided to leave every possible negative feeling behind and enjoy the day fully with Ryo. And it had worked.

They had started slow, just relaxing at home. They watched a movie, though both of them missed most of it while concentrating on each other.

After the movie they had gone out shopping which was something they hadn’t done in ages. Both of them needed new clothes and that is why they went to the closest mall and had fun trying on all kinds of clothes and accessories.

They had also shut off their cell phones to avoid anyone from getting in touch with them. For Tatsuya there hadn’t really been the need as no one really called him apart from his boss now and then. Kira sometimes sent him a text message. Jin and Yamapi, on the other hand, always called Ryo even though they were just as much Tatsuya’s friends.

“They will call your cell if I’m not answering so you close your phone as well,” Ryo had told Tatsuya taking the older one’s cell phone and shutting it off. Tatsuya knew Ryo was right. If there sometimes was a time Ryo didn’t answer the yakuza brothers, they would call Tatsuya to get in touch with them.

They had been right to do so as when they turned their phones on again, both had had missed calls and text messages from the named yakuza brothers.

“I think you should call them. Otherwise they’ll send a few dozen men to find us,” Tatsuya told Ryo when they were walking towards Tatsuya’s work place. Ryo had promised to walk Tatsuya there to make sure they could spend time together for as long as possible.

“You’re right. I wouldn’t want to be dragged to them to hear them complain about us not answering them,” Ryo agreed and with a sigh dealt the number of Yamapi.

Tatsuya could hear each and every word from Yamapi the minute he picked up the call. The other one was basically yelling them.

“What have we said about answering the call?! What if something happened to you?! Especially during times like these we need to be able to get in touch with you any time or we think the worst has happened!” Yamapi screamed.

“Sorry. We just needed to get out of this all for a while. You have no idea how much it’s affecting us and our life!” Ryo told his friend.

Tatsuya had pretty much returned to the reality the moment he had heard the second sentence Yamapi had screamed. He had really needed to forget everything for a moment.

“We understand. It’s just… we’re worried all the time that the White Death will do something when we still don’t have any idea who he is,” Yamapi sighed.

“And we understand that,” Ryo promised. “Do you have anything at all?” Ryo asked then.

“Well, we are going through all the people who have entered the country, checking their backgrounds and present locations. We’ll come to you when we have narrowed them down enough,” Pi explained the process.

Ryo sighed and he didn’t have to say a word for both of them to realize that the amount of people they had to go through was maybe too much. The thing had been going on for two months already. They simply didn’t have the time they needed. But on the other hand, there was nothing else they could do when they didn’t have any kind of a clue what White Death looked like.

“I know this sounds totally hopeless,” Pi said on a low voice so that Tatsuya didn’t hear anything at all. “But I swear to you that we are working as fast as we can,” Pi continued. It assured Ryo. He knew how many men Jin and Yamapi had working under them. If all of them were working hard, there should be results soon.

“Me and Tatsuya are going to go to Fukuoka this weekend,” Ryo shared with Yamapi, partly because he wanted to talk about something else so he wouldn’t lose all his hope.

“That’s nice. I’m sure you both need it and it’ll get you away from this for a while,” Yamapi’s smile was heard from his tone.

“Yeah. I was actually thinking about if you had some connections to some hotel in Fukuoka?” Ryo asked then. Tatsuya wasn’t sure if Ryo asked about that to get a cheap price or because he wanted to make sure they would be save in case the psycho followed them all the way down to Fukuoka. Whichever it was, Tatsuya wouldn’t complain.

In the end it seemed like Jin and Yamapi indeed had connections to Fukuoka somehow and when Ryo ended the call he told Tatsuya happily they already had a hotel room reserved for them and of course for free with unlimited room service.

“They say it’s a present from them,” Ryo shrugged his shoulders.

“They have been giving us all kinds of things as a present for the past year,” Tatsuya lifted his eye brow like he would have been suspicious of something.

“Take it as us using our rich friends in getting a weekend off to relax and to see your family,” Ryo grinned in a playful way making Tatsuya laugh out shortly.

“I guess that is exactly what we are doing,” Tatsuya admitted with a smile.

Ryo returned the smile and wrapped an arm around Tatsuya while they kept walking towards the super market.

They kissed goodbye in the front of the store and Tatsuya watched how Ryo walked away before he walked in to the store himself.

The good feeling that Tatsuya had had for the whole day disappeared the moment he turned his head enough to see Kira by the counter. He froze completely not being able to do anything for a moment. Kira lifted her head and smiled at Tatsuya happily.

“Hey, it’s a nice day, isn’t it?” Kira kept smiling almost like she wouldn’t have noticed how Tatsuya was staring at something in front of Kira in total shock.

“W-where did you get those?” Tatsuya asked in a shaky voice. His eyes were still glued to what was in front of Kira.

“Oh these? An old flower lady stopped by to give them. They’re for you. They’re form Ryo, right? Such a sweet guy. Is it your anniversary?” Kira kept talking happily still clueless to what Tatsuya was going through inside his head.

There, on the counter, right in front of Kira, was what looked like a dozen of white roses. Kira was calmly setting them in a vase with a calm smile on her face. Tatsuya, on the other hand, felt anything but calm.

“T-There was a note?” Tatsuya questioned surprised and still shocked. He moved his eyes around trying to find the note from the counter.

“Yeah, here,” Kira lifted a white card from behind the vase offering it for Tatsuya still that smile on her face and still clueless to the situation.

Tatsuya stepped quickly to the counter and took the card out of Kira’s hand. There had never been a card and he was almost hoping there would be a name of the sender that would tell Tatsuya it wasn’t the stalker, White Death, or whatever, who was sending the flowers to Tatsuya’s work place.

But nothing. There was only the name, Tatsuya, written with a beautiful and oldish handwriting. The flower delivery lady probably had written it instead of the sender.

The thought of the stalker knowing Tatsuya’s work place was making Tatsuya panic. Until then, the store had been a place where Tatsuya had felt safe but now… even that was gone.

“A-are you alright, Tatsuya? Aren’t those from Ryo?” Kira seemed to finally notice something was very wrong in the situation.

“No, these are not from Ryo,” Tatsuya swallowed hard still staring at the card. It was the first time there was a card with the flowers. And it was the first time there were more than just one rose. What was that supposed to mean? That the time was running out and that the White Death would finally strike? Was that the message?

“They’re not-but who are they from then?” Kira started to sound slightly scared, probably picking on the panic Tatsuya was feeling.

“I- I don’t know. W-why me?” Tatsuya asked on a small voice really wanting to have an answer.

“You... You have a stalker?” Kira asked.

There was no answer but Kira started to take the flowers away from the vase to throw them away. She did it as quickly as she could and then she stepped forward to take the card away from Tatsuya and ripped it into pieces throwing the pieces in the trash can as well.

“I’m sorry. If I had known…” Kira started to apologize but Tatsuya stopped her with a strong shaking of his head. He didn’t want to hear it.

“I’m sorry… I… I can’t…” Tatsuya tried to apologize himself for what he was about to do but found he wasn’t able to finish the sentence. Instead, he hoped Kira would understand and turned around rushing out of the store where he couldn’t stay. Not now.

It was already enough that Tatsuya had to feel paranoid and scared every single time he went home but to have to feel that way at his work place as well was too much. That was the only thought Tatsuya had when he was running without knowing where he was going: too much.

Everything was just too much.

~.~.~

When Ryo came home he found Tatsuya from the bedroom sitting in one corner with a baseball bat in his hand facing the door like he would be trying to defend himself against something. On top of that, Tatsuya’s eyes were blood shot, screaming of the fact that he had been crying hard.

And just a moment earlier Ryo had been happy as he had noticed there hadn’t been a flower box by their doorway. He had thought it was good news but apparently something worse had happened for Tatsuya to be in the state he was in.

Ryo rushed to Tatsuya taking the bat out of his hands. Tatsuya started to sob again helplessly and Ryo pulled him against his chest. Tatsuya clung onto Ryo like his whole existence would have depended on it and all Ryo could do was rub his back and try to get Tatsuya to calm down.

Whatever it had been that had happened to Tatsuya had surely been something that had finally broken the final wall that had been keeping Tatsuya together in the stressful situation they were in. Ryo had spoken with Jin and Yamapi about the subject earlier as all of them had been worried about how Tatsuya would be able to take the situation with everything that he had gone through not too long before for years.

Ryo had been very frightened of the moment when Tatsuya would finally break down. Now that it was at hand, Ryo wished he knew what he could do to make things better.

“Roses,” Tatsuya started to speak in between the sobs without Ryo having to ask what had actually happened. “He. Store. Roses,” Tatsuya could barely pronounce the few words and Ryo had hard time trying to figure out what Tatsuya was really trying to say.

“Calm down. Speak slowly,” Ryo spoke calmly even though he was feeling the complete opposite inside.

It took some minutes for Tatsuay to be able to calm down at all from the hopeless state he was in.

“He, he sent. Roses… he sent roses to the store,” Tatsuya stuttered the words out and lifted his head from Ryo’s chest and their eyes met. “I thought the store was safe,” Tatsuya added desperation in his eyes.

Jin and Yamapi had told that the White Death stalked his victims so it wasn’t really that surprising that he would know where Tatsuya worked. Heck, the bastard probably knew where Ryo worked as well. But Ryo could understand that Tatsuya was in some ways more innocent than anyone Ryo had met.

Ryo realized that Tatsuya had actually thought that his work place was the place where he could feel safe as the place he had come to call home wasn’t safe anymore. And one of the most important things for Ryo was to make Tatsuya feel safe. Safety was something that Tatsuya hadn’t been able to feel for so many years.

Ryo ended up not saying anything back to Tatsuya. There were no words that would make Tatsuya feel better. Ryo could have come up with lies or promises they both knew Ryo wouldn’t be able to keep but that would not make Tatsuya feel any safer. And he definitely wouldn’t have felt better himself if he had lied to Tatsuya. So, Ryo only pulled Tatsuya back against his chest to give what comfort he could give.

“Come, it’s cold on the floor,” Ryo spoke finally some minutes later and started to help Tatsuya up from the floor.

Tatsuya never let go of Ryo but let the younger one help him up and lead to the bed until Tatsuya was lying in between Ryo’s legs leaning against the lean chest. Ryo was leaning to the bed’s headboard and kept holding Tatsuya.

Ryo waited for a while longer until Tatsuya had calmed down more before he brought out the question he had been wanting to have an answer to.

“Can you tell me everything?”

Tatsuya didn’t speak right away and Ryo wasn’t expecting that either. He knew how Tatsuya needed time to collect his thoughts to be able to speak about hard things. Same had happened when they were children and Tatsuya’s parents had started to avoid their son. Back then Tatsuya had also been crying and Ryo had had to hold him for as long as it took from Tatsuya to calm down and after that wait for Tatsuya to collect all the thoughts.

“I went inside after I couldn’t see you any longer,” Tatsuya started on a low voice that was slightly muffled as Tatsuya was leaning his face against Ryo’s chest. “And by the counter Kira was placing dozen of white roses in a vase,” Tatsuya continued.

“Dozen? Who brought the flowers?” Ryo started to ask questions. He was shocked to hear about the change in the rose deliveries. There had never been more than just one rose.

“Kira said an old lady brought them over,” Tatsuya answered his breathing slow, like he would have been trying to keep calm with Ryo’s scent. “There was also a card that had my name on it,” Tatsuya told the other change that had happened.

“Why would he suddenly change the pattern?” Ryo whispered the question that made him wonder and fear for the worst.

Tatsuya didn’t answer and Ryo guessed it was because he couldn’t. If Tatsuya had said his thoughts out loud, he probably would have broken down. Besides, their thoughts were most likely the exact same. The climax was close and the assassin who loved cat and mouse play was letting them know beforehand.

The play had been going on for long enough for them both to know that there was no way they could prevent things from happening. They still had no clue about who was after Tatsuya: Jin and Pi were still only working on trying to get a list of suspects.

Those two things combined only made them more and more frightened of everything that would happen around them during the next few days. Ryo could already see Tatsuya flinching of every possible sound from the constant stress he would be experiencing.

“When will this finally end, Ryo?” Tatsuya asked lying against Ryo’s chest having stopped sobbing and was as calm as he was capable of.

“I don’t know,” Ryo answered honestly keeping his hold on Tatsuya.

The question neither of them was brave enough to even think about was left hanging in between them silently.

Would both of them still be alive afterwards?

Neither of them knew.

~.~.~

Kira was left alone in the store after Tatsuya rushed out of the place. It wasn’t such a big problem as the store was empty most of the time anyways. So when Tatsuya had just turned around with an apology and ran out, Kira hadn’t even tried to stop him. Because that is what a good friend would do. Anyone could have seen how much the roses had affected Tatsuya.

Kira started to clean up the rest of the roses and took the vase away to the backroom where she had found it from in the first place.

She returned to her work with a serious look on her face and there was no trace of the usual smile when a customer walked in to buy snacks.

Some minutes later Kira’s cell phone started to ring. She took the device from the counter and walked to one of the shelves to lean against it softly before answering the call.

She didn’t greet the other one on the line but listened to what the other had to say instead. She knew already what the call would be about. The calls were always about the same subject anyways and there was no need to be friendly.

“How is it?” the male voice asked.

“Yes,” she said then. “Everything’s going as planned,” she promised to the one on the other end of the line confidently.

“Aren’t you taking longer than usually?” the male voice questioned.

Kira could tell the man was suspicious and maybe even worried that things weren’t going as they were supposed to.

“I want to enjoy this one,” Kira grinned in a way that made her look slightly evil, a total opposite from what she usually looked like. She knew it could be heard from her voice as well. The male had heard it often enough.

“I know you enjoy the cat and mouse play but get it done already. I want to get rid of it,” the man said.

“Don’t worry. It’ll be over and done with real soon,” she promised smirking and ended the call.

Yes, everything would end soon.

One way or another.
