The weekend couldn’t have come fast enough for Tatsuya. He couldn’t have waited to get away from the town. Tokyo was driving Tatsuya to insanity with the White Death stalking him behind every possible corner. And after the incident at his work place, Tatsuya was more aware of that than ever before.
Jin and Yamapi were still going through the lists and photos of all the passengers who had entered Japan around the time when Tatsuya had started to receive the flowers. They were only about halfway done and they had no idea how long it would take before White Death would take the last step. The thought terrified Tatsuya and he was sure that Ryo was feeling the exact same.
The couple was not talking that much anymore. Both tried to get home as soon as possible and they spent every night until weekend home just holding each other.
When the weekend finally came, the two were feeling they couldn’t get out of the town fast enough.
They left already on Friday and Tatsuya had had to ask from Kira if he could leave earlier. Kira had been understanding, although she had no idea what was really going, and had let Tatsuya go with Ryo who had also been able to get a permission to leave early.
The moment Tokyo was no longer in their sight, Tatsuya could feel the atmosphere getting lighter and an hour later they were chatting and laughing like there were no worries in the whole world. And it felt good to be like that.
They didn’t know that someone was actually following their traces and was heading down to Fukuoka as well. For the two of them, the danger was only in Tokyo which was kind of naïve but they needed to relax and throw away all the stress they had been feeling.
They travelled by train. Both the couple and their stalker. It was the fastest and most comfortable way of traveling. Ryo and Tatsuya both fell asleep for the remaining 4 hours and they could actually sleep instead of waking up every second hour from the stress from the constant fear.
Neither of them woke up even once before they had arrived and some other passenger was kind enough to shake Ryo awake on his way out from the train.
Ryo turned to Tatsuya to wake the older one up.
“Ah, the air feels so much lighter to breathe here,” Tatsuya smiled widely when getting the first breath of the air of Fukuoka. He stretched his arms up in the air feeling better than in a long time.
“Let’s go and try to find the hotel,” Ryo offered a hand to Tatsuya who took it still smiling.
The hotel was one of those big and famous hotels just in the center of Fukuoka that was also called Hakata. It was also relatively close to both subway and local train to make their moving around as easy as possible.
They were welcomed by the staff like V.I.P guests and were led to their suits without any questions. Tatsuya had never seen a hotel room as big as that before. But all the new and interesting around him made the worries seem even further to him. It was his new safe haven and he was going to enjoy it the best he could.
Soon after they were already outside exploring the Hakata area. There were many shopping possibilities, like the Tenjin shopping mall and underground shopping center. They also managed to find a place that sold the famous Hakata ramen and it was indeed more delicious than the usual ramen Tatsuya had eaten in Tokyo.
As the train trip had taken 5 hours from Tokyo to Fukuoka, there wasn’t many hours left before it was midnight and by then Ryo and Tatsuya were once again so tired that they just decided to return to their suite and sleep.
They had agreed about finding Tatsuya’s family's house the next day. Tatsuya knew it was going to be emotionally hard on him. That is also the reason that he couldn’t fall asleep even though he was tired.
“Tatsuya, you keep rolling around,” Ryo noted voice tired and eyes closed. He had been trying to fall asleep but Tatsuya’s restless moving prevented him from doing so.
“I’m sorry. My nervousness makes it impossible for me to fall asleep,” Tatsuya apologized and sighed. The positive thing was that the White Death was not on his mind. It was all about possibly seeing his parents and older sister the coming day.
Ryo opened his eyes and moved his body closer to Tatsuya’s to cuddle the older one close.
“I can only imagine what you must be feeling like. But this is what you want, right? To see with your own eyes that they are doing well,” Ryo checked. The last thing he wanted was to make Tatsuya do something he didn’t want to.
“Yes. I really want to see them,” Tatsuya admitted. It had been nice to hear that his sister had gotten into a university in Fukuoka but it had been years ago and so Tatsuya wanted to be sure they were still doing well.
“Have I ever told you how good of a person you are?” Ryo asked with a soft smile. He traced Tatsuya’s temple and cheek with his fingers gently.
“Maybe… once… or twice,” Tatsuya pondered bringing a slight playful tone to it.
“I remember how you ran crying to me every single day after your family had hurt you emotionally over and over again and still all you think about is their well-being all the time,” Ryo told admiringly. He knew not everyone would think like that but Tatsuya was the type to think about everyone else’s feelings first before his own in many cases.
“No matter what, they are my family. Even though they don’t remember me, I will always remember the good days we had together and that’s why I want to make sure everything’s alright in their lives,” Tatsuya turned his head to Ryo’s direction.
“I know. I wouldn’t expect anything else from you,” Ryo moved his fingers to Tatsuya’s hair to play with the locks.
“Thank you, Ryo, for bringing me here,” Tatsuya thanked sincerely.
“Of course. Now if you would only sleep, I’d be grateful,” Ryo leaned closer to kiss Tatsuya lightly on the lips.
Tatsuya moved after the kiss pushing Ryo around until he could lay his head on Ryo’s chest. He hoped Ryo’s calming heart beat would lull him to sleep. The younger one seemingly understood what Tatsuya was doing as he moved slightly more to make them both more comfortable.
It still took longer than usually from Tatsuya to fall asleep but in the end the dream world pulled him into a dreamless sleep
~.~.~
Tatsuya slept late because of all the lack of sleep that had been piling up during the last weeks. Ryo also slept late and even though he woke up twice during the morning he didn’t even think about getting up before it was midday. That was also around the time when Tatsuya finally woke up.
The hotel staff served them with a fancy breakfast and finally the two set off for the day’s mission. With the help of Jin and Yamapi they had gotten the precise address of Tatsuya’s parents and had figured out how to get there.
They needed to take a train so they headed to the station. They stopped quickly at one store to buy bottles to drink as Tatsuya was feeling slightly thirsty.
After buying the tickets they went inside the area. They had to wait for the train to arrive for some time. First train that was about to take off when they got there was too slow for their liking so they waited for the next one that would get them to their destination faster.
Ryo took a hold of Tatsuya’s hand while they were standing still waiting for the train. He was feeling the nervous atmosphere that was surrounding the older one.
“It’s kinda stupid to be this nervous about seeing my own family, isn’t it?” Tatsuya tried to chuckle but it sounded weird because of the nervousness.
“It’s not,” Ryo denied. “It’s understandable. If I were you, I’d probably be even more nervous,” Ryo admitted.
Tatsuya’s nervousness was mostly from the fear of what if his family wasn’t doing that well. What could he do then? He could come up with many things he could do for them but they all involved using his ability and he was not ready to use his power again. And he doubted he’d ever be ready to use it ever again. He had already used it too many times on too many people.
The train came and in a minute they were let inside. Ryo chose them seats and they set down to wait for the train to take off.
Tatsuya landed his head on Ryo’s shoulder to feel some comfort after the train took off. His heart was beating faster from the nervousness. He was constantly aware of the fact that he was getting closer and closer to the place where his family was living.
Ryo’s phone started to vibrate in the train on their way to the station which was closest to Tatsuya’s parents’ home. Because they were inside the train, Ryo cancelled the call and send Jin a text message that he would call after they get off the train.
So, once they got off the station Ryo took his cell phone again and called Jin back to see what he had to tell them. Tatsuya stood close by trying to hear something as well.
“Hey man, you called?” Ryo said once Jin picked up the phone.
“How’s Fukuoka?” Jin asked. Tatsuya could only barely hear what Jin was saying because there was so much noise around them. There weren’t that many people compared to Tokyo but the passing trains and cars made enough noise to make listening harder.
“Warmer than Tokyo. And for what we’ve seen it’s really nice,” Ryo shared. Tatsuya had also found Fukuoka pleasant place and would be glad to return there if he still would have a chance to do that later.
“That’s great. I’m just calling to say that we’re going to bring in the first list of the people who haven’t been cleared out from the suspect list. We figured we need to start to try to find the suspect as soon as possible, you know,” Jin went into the reason why he really had called. “So Tatsuya needs to go through them to see if he can recognize someone,” Jin continued.
“Yeah ok. I’ll talk about it with him,” Ryo promised.
After that Jin didn’t have anything else to say and the call was cut.
“You heard?” Ryo turned to ask Tatsuya who had stepped away to give Ryo more space to move around. He nodded as an answer. “Everything alright?” Ryo asked to be sure.
“Yeah. I just hope the person who is after me will be on that list,” Tatsuya sighed to brave himself up. Ryo put a hand on his shoulder and gave encouraging squeeze.
“Let’s go and find your parents’ house,” Ryo smiled.
Still, without them noticing, the one person was following them as closely as possible, hiding in the shadows and behind the disguise. So far neither Ryo nor Tatsuya had sensed anything suspicious which made the person’s job easier.
“This should be it,” Ryo stopped looking from his phone’s screen to the house in front of them. On the screen there was the address of Uedas.
Tatsuya came to stand next to Ryo and observed the house. It was a typical Japanese house, a pretty one, though. Tatsuya immediately liked every single detail about the house and he knew he would be pleased to live in the house if he still was part of his family.
“Looking at the house they seem to be doing well,” Ryo concluded. The house was well taken care of for what one could see from the outside.
“I’m glad they’ve found a beautiful house like this,” Tatsuya smiled. Ryo turned his head to Tatsuya and smiled at the older one.
“Excuse me, can I help you?” a female voice came from behind them.
The both of them turned around and Tatsuya’s eyes widened in surprise. In front of him stood his mother with a shopping bag in her hand. She was standing still looking at them standing in front of her house with curiosity. Then she seemed to recognize something.
“Ryo-kun? Is that you?” she asked sounding surprised with a hint of happiness in her voice.
“Yes, it’s me Ueda-san,” Ryo gave a smile at the older lady and quickly took a peek towards Tatsuya to see how the other was doing.
“It’s been long. What brings you to Fukuoka?” she questioned like old close neighbors would when running into each other by accident.
“School work. Field trip,” Ryo lied quickly.
“This must be your class mate, then,” Tatsuya’s mother turned to her son without any recognition on her face. Tatsuya hadn’t exactly seen it coming, not to that extent, when his heart felt like it had been stabbed suddenly by his mother’s words.
“Y-yeah. I dragged him with me to check out if I could find you. Wanted to come and say hi after such a long time now that we are in the same town,” Ryo kept explaining
“That is very sweet of you,” Tatsuya’s mother smiled. “Would you like to come inside?” she asked then politely.
Ryo peeked at Tatsuya again and he could see how the older one was breaking slowly inside from the power of reality. Ryo could tell Tatsuya hadn’t been anywhere close to being ready to actually meet his family members face to face. Now Ryo could only wonder how Tatsuya must have been feeling when the two of them first met after 13 years.
As, Ryo had understood, on some level Ryo had been more important to Tatsuya than his own family. It must have been that even when they were as young as they had been before Tatsuya had been kidnapped, Tatsuya had been slowly but surely falling in love with Ryo.
Ryo couldn’t honestly even start imagining how it must have felt when the people you loved the most showed absolutely no recognition of you. And of top of all when it was you yourself who was the reason for that.
“I think I have to pass that offer,” Ryo tried to decline politely Tatsuya’s mother’s offer. If Tatsuya’s reaction had been any better, he probably would have agreed onto it. He would have wanted to give Tatsuya a chance to hear from his mother’s mouth personally that she and their family were alright. But the whole situation was hurting Tatsuya.
“Oh don’t be silly. It’s been years since we’ve seen each other. I want to hear everything that has happened. Your friend won’t mind, will he?” Tatsuya’s mother turned to Tatsuya with a sweet smile.
“No, I won’t mind,” Tatsuya answered as he couldn’t have possible said no to his mother when she was using such a tone. Ryo could tell that was the case, though. And Tatsuya was hoping that he would because he had absolutely no idea how he would survive from that.
“See. There’s no harm done if you two just come inside and have a cup of tea with me,” Tatsuya’s mother turned back to Ryo.
Ryo tried to come up with a way to get Tatsuya out of the situation without hurting the woman’s feelings. Spontaneously Ryo took his cell phone from his pocket and faked to be surprised by the time.
“I think we won’t have time for a cup of tea. How about we talk a few minutes here? We have a meeting with the other students in the center not much later,” Ryo kept lying about the field trip thing.
”Oh… I guess that’s alright. How’s your mother?” Tatsuya’s mother accepted the lie without suspecting a thing. Well, Ryo had always been known as the honest child in their village even though he had been hiding things a lot.
“She’s alright. Still living in the same house going around the village talking to everyone. You know her,” Ryo shrugged leaving out the drama that had happened a year ago.
“She really loves her life there. I always knew she will grow old there,” Tatsuya’s mother smiled. “My husband is working for one of the big companies here in Fukuoka. He loves the challenge,” she told then.
Tatsuya was happy to hear his father was doing so well, though the fact that he was standing there in front of his mother without being recognized still hurt him. He knew he had erased their memories for their sake but the thought that his family was doing a lot better without a freak like him in their family hurt him deep. Deeper than he had expected.
“And what about your daughter?” Ryo asked politely still stealing glances of Tatsuya looking for the signs of the final break down.
“She graduated and started working as a teacher. Now she’s back to school to study even further. She’s very ambitious. A real pride of parents with only one child. Like you must be to your parents, Ryo-kun,” Tatsuya’s mother smiled with pride clear in her eyes.
That is when Ryo noticed the change in Tatsuya that screamed of a horrible break down any second. Clearly hearing your own mother say right in front of you that you were not her child was killing Tatsuya.
“Yes, they’re proud of me,” Ryo hurried to answer and looked at the time. “We really have to go now Ueda-san. It was great to see you again,” Ryo smiled politely taking a hold of Tatsuya’s arm to drag the older one away from the scene.
“It’s a shame you need to go. Come again any time you have time,” Tatsuya’s mother bid her goodbye. Ryo turned to nod at her and hurried to drag Tatsuya away. He could already feel the shaking of the older one’s body from the coming break down.
He managed to drag the two of them far enough to make it impossible for Tatsuya’s mother to see them and he took a sharp turn to one of the side alleys where he immediately pulled Tatsuya to his chest. That moment Tatsuya was already sobbing helplessly. And all Ryo could do was hold him as close as possible.
The stranger had followed the couple in the shadows the whole time and had managed to get close enough to hear each word that was exchanged between Ryo and the older lady. The stranger was well aware that the older lady was Tatsuya’s mother and could only wonder what they were doing at their doorsteps.
Then suddenly Ryo bid fast goodbye to the lady and the stranger had had to hurry and hide. The bad thing was that Ryo led the two to the same alley where the stranger was hiding. The stranger hid in the inset of the wall that only barely kept the stranger hidden from the couple.
The stranger was Kira and there was no way she could let Tatsuya see her. She had followed the couple all the way from Tokyo and had kept behind them the whole time even in Fukuoka. She had disguised herself with a black wig.
What surprised her the most was Tatsuya’s crying. She had never expected that to happen today. But Tatsuya’s cries grew in helplessness and when Kira encouraged herself to peek behind the corner she witnessed Ryo holding Tatsuya close trying to give silent support.
“I never thought it would hurt this much,” Kira heard Tatsuya say from between his sobs.
“I know. You knew this all but still, child can never imagine what it feels like when own mother can’t recognize him before it really happens,” Ryo answered in a soothing voice.
“It hurts to know that they’re better off without me, although I only erased their memories because the Americans would have killed them if I didn’t,” Tatsuya was pouring his heart out to Ryo and had no idea Kira was eavesdropping them.
Kira had had no idea about what Tatsuya and Ryo’s conversation was about. She had been convinced that she had been told everything about Tatsyta but the moment she had met Tatsuya in person and had gotten to know him more, she had realized that it must have not been the case. And now she was sure more things had actually been hidden from her.
She needed some time to think.
~.~.~
After Tatsuya had calmed down, Ryo had taken the older one back to their hotel room as soon as he could and that is where they stayed for the rest of the day. Tatsuya needed time to think things through and that is what Ryo was giving him: space and time.
He had brought Tatsuya all the way to the bedroom, laid out comfortable clothes for Tatsuya, told him to take a bath or something and then left him in the bedroom. Before exiting he had told Tatsuya to call him if he needed anything. Then he had turned around and closed the door walking to the couch and taking a seat on it.
And that is how the whole evening had been spent. After hours Ryo called the room service to order some food. Tatsuya needed to eat something as well.
Ryo walked to the bedroom door and knocked it a few times before opening it halfway to peek inside.
Tatsuya was sitting by the window staring at the view that opened in front of him. Ryo was relieved to notice the older one had changed into more comfortable clothes.
Ryo walked up to the older one hugging him gently to his chest and placing a kiss on Tatsuya’s temple.
“I ordered food. Do you want me to bring you some here?” Ryo asked on a low voice.
It took a moment before Tatsuya answered.
“I’ll come out to eat with you,” Tatsuya promised.
“Ok. I guess you’ll hear when the doorbell rings. It’ll be the room service,” Ryo told.
Suddenly Tatsuya turned his head towards Ryo and their eyes locked. Tatsuya lifted his hand and traced Ryo’s face tenderly.
“Thank you for being so kind to me,” Tatsuya thanked.
Ryo smiled placing a hand on top of Tatsuya’s and moved it gently so that he could kiss the inside of Tatsuya’s palm.
“You’d do the same for me,” Ryo said firmly but gently. Then he exited the room again to give some more time for Tatsuya to be alone.
Ryo didn’t really have anything else to do but to wait for the room service to arrive. He opened the television to feel less bored or awkward in the big suite room all by himself.
He never really started watching the program that was on, though. Instead, he was hard trying to imagine what Tatsuya was feeling like. But the closest he could get was ‘horrible’ and that must have been the understatement of the century.
It was the first time that Ryo’s mind crossed the thought of having Tatsuya’s ability. Tatsuya surely was able to feel what others were feeling like they were his own feelings. And Ryo was desperate to know how exactly Tatsuya was feeling so that he would be able to help the person he loved the most.
The thought came only because no matter how he tried to imagine he simply could not imagine his mother not recognizing him and especially not the pain that he would feel because of that. Ryo had mostly been hearing the phrase ‘a mother knows her child’. But in Tatsuya’s case it was completely different.
Ryo was so deep in thought that he barely registered the doorbell ringing. He stood up and hurried to the door to let in the hotel staff who served the food on their table. During that time Tatsuya came out from the room and after the staff left he sat down on the table.
“What do you want to drink?” Ryo asked having opened the fridge.
“Just water,” Tatsuya answered and so Ryo filled in two glasses with cold water bringing them to the table right after he had closed the fridge again.
They started eating in silence. Ryo wanted to talk to Tatsuya badly, ask him if he was alright but such an obvious question in a situation as theirs seemed totally out of question. Also, starting to talk about something else seemed like avoiding the subject and disrespecting the whole situation.
“Can we watch a movie after eating?” Tatsuya asked quietly like he was afraid of making too big of a noise in the silence.
Ryo lifted his head to look at Tatsuya. Ryo wasn’t sure if Tatsuya really wanted to watch a movie or if it was to break the silence.
“Sure. If you really want to,” Ryo agreed.
The rest of the time they were quiet until they had eaten everything and moved to the couch in front of the television that was still on but the voices were so low they hadn’t been heard earlier.
Tatsuya took the remote control and chose a movie from the selection the hotel had. He chose the newest American comedy movie and settled down on the couch next to Ryo and laid his head on Ryo’s shoulder.
Ryo couldn’t take the silence any longer so he took a hold of Tatsuya’s face with one hand and guided Tatsuya’s head so that they were facing each other. After Tatsuya moved his eyes to lock them with Ryo’s the younger one tried to send some sort of message to Tatsuya through his eyes because he still had no idea what he should say.
“I’ll be alright,” Tatsuya promised clearly getting the message Ryo was trying to send. “I wasn’t prepared for the pain but life goes on and at least I have my most important person in my life,” Tatsuya smiled with a hint of the pain he had felt remaining in his heart.
Ryo smiled wrapping an arm around Tatsuya’s waist to pull the older one in his lap. The movie had started but they were concentrating on each other. Tatsuya ended up straddling Ryo’s lap. He wrapped his arms around Ryo’s neck as the younger hugged him close.
They didn’t need words any longer. Ryo knew Tatsuya was going to be alright some how and Tatsuya knew Ryo had understood it. Even though the situation hurt, Tatsuya had come to notice that he probably wouldn’t be able to have a normal life and he did not want to disturb his family like that. It was already enough that Ryo was involved in it with his two best friends.
Both of them tried not to think about the next day when they would return to Tokyo and to the reality of the dangers that were hunting them there. To be honest, both of them were scared as neither of them could tell if they would make it alive of the situation.
But instead of talking about the fears and keeping the fears in their minds all the time, they both silently decided to just live happily together for as long as was given to them. It might not be that long but better that than nothing.
Tatsuya pulled back enough to be able to place his lips on Ryo’s and soon the movie lost all its meaning as Ryo stood up and carried Tatsuya to the bedroom.
Tatsuya managed to kick the door shut somehow while Ryo was concentrated on getting them to the huge bed as soon as possible. They both were feeling the sudden need to be as close to the other as physically possible.
That is also why they didn’t waste any time in stripping each other out of the clothes, throwing and dropping them carelessly all over the room, leaving some of them even on the bed as there was no time to make sure everything dropped on the floor.
The television was still on in the other room playing the comedy movie Tatsuya had picked up. It was one of those chargeable things but Jin and Yamapi were paying for everything so the couple didn’t spare even one thought to worry about it.
