wouldn't it be a lovely headline

I watched the Annie Leibovitz documentery, Life Through a Lens, last week. Really a great documentary, whether or not you're interested in photography.

I have to admit, there was a lot I didn't know about her. Firstly, she started as a relatively no-one photographer with a relatively fledgeling magazine- the Rolling Stones, where she remained the only staff photographer for years. Heck of a way to launch your career, don't you think? Anyhow, I had never realised the extent of things that she's shot- pictures that I'd recognise anywhere that she took. A lot about her philosophy on photography, other's perspective of what it was like to work with her. They went into detail about- multiple shoots including showing the process the promo pics for Marie Antoinette (I want to be a photographer shooting beautiful gowns in sunlight in Versailles, dang it!) And lots of everyone talking about what a creative genius she is. Personally, I would have liked more on the shoots from her- I know it wasn't a technical photography documentary, and I know artists tend to like to let their works represent themselves, but you almost never hear her say, "I chose this setting because..." It's all about who she shot and how amazing the pictures are, and I would've liked more depth.

Still ended up being inspiring. I'm honestly at an awkward spot in my photography- with limited resources (and marketing,) I have a complicated see-saw of trying to get more work and trying not to get in over my head. Also, frankly? I'm bored. Not currently impressed with any of my stuff. Which is a good thing- I have figured out what I can do, how to do it.... and now I have to figure out how to challenge myself to the next skill level. Need to get more challenging personal work, not just paid gigs (though I'm currently in a slow spot; a few more of those will be good too.) Not much plotting currently, just taking my camera out more often and waiting to see what will happen. I feel like I'm in between a few styles & decisions and am still not sure which way they'll go.

Anyhow, we were downtown at the Point this weekend- first time there actually, i'm such a bad pittsburgher- and of course I had my camera, so a few more updates & flowery things underneath. As always, the RSS feed will notify you whenever I update.
