I was waiting in line at the café next door to my work when the prepossessing young lady in front of me was asking the baristas questions like "What's espresso?" and "What's a caramocha?" This young lady was in her mid-twenties like me, but how in the universe was she ignorant of what are mochas, lattés, and frappuccinos? I was inclined to shout, "Hello, the Modern Caffeinated Revolution had been upon American for twelve years miss!" Perhaps she ignored Starbucks as it invaded every major shopping complex in America before its competitors like Caribou Coffee signed leases banning Starbucks from the lifestyle centers of Suburbia. Perhaps she eschewed those enterprises that targeted young adults like herself in their efforts to create lifelong loyalists, in this case java junkies. Still, I am astonished at her when there are books like How Starbucks Saved My Life and espresso fiends who remain indignant that Starbucks closed nationwide for three hours to re-educate its baristas in making the bestest beverages evah.
